Hi all,
my daughters pre school (which i am chair person of ) has just received "inadequate" for safeguarding due to us only having access to a "shared" toilet. We have to share the facilities with the church we run it in...a Parent and toddler group use the other room during one of our sessions as because a mother and her child came up to use the loo on our ofsted inspection it was deemed unsuitable and ofsted inspector said she had no choice but to mark as inadequate....has anyone else heard of this happening, what are your views on this please...could really do with the feedback
It's really got to us as we did very well over all.:(

Is it just one toilet?
I assume that the children who go to the toilet are not left unattended and that the children and parents from thetoddler group cannot access the pre-school children?
Could you appeal?
Sorry not much help.

wow, not sure what to say about this.... did Ofsted suggest how it could be made adequate, for example, locking the toilet door from your side so there is no chance of a child going alone to the toilet when it is shared? And locking the door to the other room when the toddler group isn't on so that no chance of anyone coming in to the toilets??

..there are 2 toilets in there and the children are never unattended one or two staff with the children. The toilets are opposite the main pre school room which are closed and secure at all times so there is no chance of anyone getting into that room un detected and no chance that one of the pre schoolies are left alone in the loo so that anyone could walk in
Ofsted did suggest a engaged sign on the outside of the loo but as we share the facilities under contract we are only counting on their goodwill not to enter as far as i can see. will have to look into wethr we can "lock" them out but i know we are not alowed to obstruct the facilities from other members using the chrch...surley we will never get above satisfactory for this reason ??

perhaps a risk assessment and policy/procedure to show that you are meeting safeguarding requirements and concerns?
it seems silly to me, if the children are being adequately supervised then how is it a safeguarding concern - just the opposite IMO.
Perhaps you need to challenge this decision? If you can prove the children are safe then challenge.
Society is going bananas and we are becoming so blooming paranoid about tom, dick, harry, sally and alice - everything needs to be safeguarded and common sense can take a run and jump.
blimey us minders take our kids to public loos - shared ones shock horror where there are other adults - does that make us all inadequate then purely on the basis the inspectors have judged you on. at least your loos are in a secured building - we take our bairns to ones in shopping centers, shops, leisure centers/soft plays/ toddler groups......
challenge it:thumbsup:

challenge it .
the preschool i worked at , and my youngest now attends , is in a village hall. The parish council offices are there too and the toilets are in the hall corridor , shared by both - and any visitors to the parish council , and tbh lots of the older villagers who know it is open and so acts as their public loo!
Children are accompanied to the toilet , either going into the cubicle with them or standing outside the cubicle door depending upon the child.
This was fine by our inspector , in fact safeguarding got outstanding if i remember rightly.

I agree with Pip - I would challenge the decision - make sure you have the relevant paper work to show your risk assessment and safeguarding procedures in order. Think the inspector's decision was a bit OTT.
Good luck and let us know what happens

A local pre-school to me use shared toilets as they use a village hall. There is boules, flower arranging clubs, alsorts of other things going on where other people need to use the toilets.
They got Outstanding for everything.
