Hi guys, recently got a satisfactory in inspection which i was devistated about but hay ho thats life. So got my report today good comments and quite a few goods aswell. However my new cert says i can only now look after 2 in early years. I have one 2yr old which I have for 2 afternoons a week and a 15 month old more or less full time and my own son of 2 years! Does this mean I have to get rid of one. I don't understand overall I got a good write up just got hung up on stupid things, ie no chop sticks in the house, ok the kids used the same towel to dry hands but didn't know that was bad, I knew they had to wash seperately, and I need to arrange more numercy activities! and thats it.:panic: Anyone got any ideas im really stressed thinking about quiting now. Forgot to mention this was my first inspection.

as for your number you can look after 2 children plus your son so thats the 3 under 5 as your son uses up on of your spaces

The maximum early years children you can care for at anyone time is 3 under 5.
Because your own child is under 5 - he/she is counted in your numbers, so yes, you can only care for 2 under 5's at anyone time.
You already care for 2 (without including your own child) so you don't need to "get rid" of any of the children. So don't panic!

Seems as though your inspector was quite picky!

Try not to worry/get upset, about being graded as satisfactory - it means you are doing your job correctly!!

There's nothing wrong with a 'satisfactory' grading, it means that you are doing the job right and children are being well cared for and you're a fine childminder.

Don't be upset by it, from what you say it's nothing major that they've picked up. You're not putting children's safety at risk or anything like that.
Sounds like the points picked up are all things you can cover really quickly and you can explain this to parents as they come and see you. Lots of things like the towel thing aren't obvious (I don't think so anyway) and you're not a mind reader but now you know and I imagine it's sorted. Can't imagine any parents would be particularly worried about chops sticks or hand towels anyway!

Chin up - you're doing a fab job!

 Don't be disheartend about gaining a satisfactory that means you provision is sound it doesn't mean you are a bad childminder. It was your first inspection you are doing great Iam sure the parents think so stop giving yourself a hard time I have my fisrt inspection soon too

I'm sure you did brilliantly - I think the inpector was just being pickey none of the minders who got a good around here use separate towels for the children and most of them don't have a second loo so they use the same towel as the rest of the family - I don't imagine that they have chopsticks in their kitchens either and I know they have very little specific number resources so I think your inspector was particularly pickey - Actually even the one minder in the town who was awarded Outstanding doesn't use separate towels.

I bet if you asked most minders on here how they felt after their inspections particularly their first one they would all say they felt deflated - well perhaps wih the exception of those awarded outstanding - the build up takes it out of you especially for yoru first because you have such little time to get so much in place but now you have you have about 3 years to get everything else in place - Satisfactory means you meet the requirements so don't worry about that.

As the others have said, dont beat yourslef up over a satisfactory, as that means your donig what your suppose to do. Im sure given another inspector you may have even got a good from the sound of it.

Dont give up, you dont have to worry about another inspection for a few years now.

It's the word 'satisfactory' that gets me. There's something about it that just doesn't make you feel great. It's like saying 'it'll do' or 'well......it's ok'. I'm sure there is a much better word that could be used instead. 'Meets all statutory requirements' sounds better than 'satisfactory'.
Mind you the thesaurus alternatives are no better.......adequate, acceptable etc.
I say be proud of your satisfactory!!!

How picky can they get !!!

I was marked down as I gave mindee a slice of apple without washing his hands first. It was 9.45 am, not been outside and had washed his hands after toilet half hour before. OMG the germs he must have picked up in the meantime  common sense out of the window. On my report for the next few years as 'not always wash hands before having food' - was before EYFS.

I do have seperate towels though :)

SPIT................I could have ripped her head off and I am usually such a peace loving person, but I wanted her out the door.

Satisfactory is such a :censored: stupid word when we work so hard. My inspector has made a name for herself round here - most minders got satisfactory a few good in the past 3 years.

Have heard recently of an Outstanding but it's someone we never see at groups, park, days out etc. No one recomends people to her as she is just a name on the list. No idea if she has mindees

My town and surrounding area has gone from over 70 minders down to 20 something in the last year or so. :(

We need a range of multicultural resources that reflect the cultural diversity of our country and the world around us.

Chinese cultural resources are usually easy to get hold of - chopsticks, bowls, spoons, plates, dressing up clothes etc.

Also think Indian role play... signs on Sparklebox, metal dishes and serving spoons, Indian menu...

And many more! :D

Hi, I got a satisfactory recently too and I was absolutely heartbroken. I have to agree it is the word SATISFACTORY thats so awful! I actually burst into tears when she was here as well:blush: I then went on the ofsted website and had a nosey at all the inspections she had done and I think out of about 12 inspections only 2 of them were marked good! So then I got to thinking it must be her whos horrible and not me who's rubbish!;)
I have to admit though I have lost all enthusiasm for the job! Especially the EYFS bit. But like you said Heyho! ;)

It depends so much on who actually inspects and how they are feeling on the day, Satisfactory is a good place to start, some of my friends are getting the grade after a good and that's really hard. Also hard for me to see why, when they seem to be doing the same as other minders getting good.

I think if you get a grade you are unhappy with you should be able to be re graded after six months by another inspector (obviously you may not get a better grade then) but three years is to long especially as most people sort out any short comings straight away

That is just so demoralising and disheartening! Especially when you know when you are doing a good job! This is becoming a common story - and no consistency at all in the grading!
