i will be due my first ofsted inspection soon and having looked at some previous posts it seems like they like to sit and ask you lots of questions, but when your looking after 3 children how do you get a chance to sit and talk to the inspector???:panic: I look after my son who is 11 months, a 9 month old and his 3 year old brother, and i seriously can't imagine being able to sit down and talk to the inspector, and am worried that whilst answering questions i might not answer them prpoerly as constantly checking what the children are doing.

the very last thing they will want you to do is SIT and talk to them - they will ask you questions when they think it is right and safe to do so.

Don't worry about it. The inspectors are used to how we work and expect to take second place to anything you have to do with the children.

When i had mine she sat at one end of the table whilst we all painted at the other end. After snack one child went for a sleep and the others played a game and then wanted to watch a film on dvd. Once everyone was settled we then had a chance to talk in depth.

That's one reason why it is so valuable to have completed your Sef! :D

I'd be tempted to submit so she can read it before she gets to you... depends if you have the time or not though.

There's no point rushing it if you're not happy with the result. x

I'd submit your SEF as early as possible. I did a very detailed one, took me forever BUT did allow the inspector to look at what I'd written and make sure I'd written it right:laughing: and allow me to get on with my day without hardly any questions.

She did ask a few but if the kids needed me they came first, as is to be expected.

I got my husband to take the day off and take my child out for the day, so I could concentrate on the mindees, I also took my inspector for a walk with the double buggy, just told her we had to get out, really good opportunity to chat.Mind you my inspector was very human, lol

The sef is great for answering lots of questions, they are used to us being busy, mine just followed me around the house :laughing:

My inspector advised me to submit my SEF even though I hadn't completed it, she said it was better reading an unfinished SEF before hand, rather than it being handed to her on the day,

good luck :)

I submitted my SEF but actually, because I couldnt 'sit and show her all the stuff I wanted to because the children wanted to be outside etc, I felt there was loads she didn't see.

Also she asked very open question which it was hard to think about when you are chatting to and supporting little ones. You could almost do with a phone interview afterwards couldn't you to talk when you can think properly!

My Inspector sat at the table while me and mindee did play doh. She asked questions but only at times when it was suitable ie a pause in mine and mindee's conversation etc.

When the inspector had finished tap-tapping on her laptop, she asked if I could come and sit at the dining table with her for a chat. Mindee had the TV on now and so I went to sit with Inspector, but mindee asked me to sit with her!! So Inspector said Go, thats fine.

After all the exitement of the play doh (:laughing: ) my mindee fell asleep and so Inpector and I had a chat then also.

SEF = Self Evaluation Form
It's a long and time consuming form that you can complete online for Ofsted. Basically you evaluate your practice and tell them what you do to promote children's development and any plans you have for improvement. Time consuming, not compulsory, but they do use it and it saves them asking you loads of questions. They will ask you to complete one when they arrive if you haven't done one.
