She was here for just under 4 hours. She spent a lot of time on the EYFS stuff and was unconcerned about the rest of the children
She didn't look round the house or at any of my equipment - none of the safety stuff (fire blanket, first aid etc)
She asked me lots of questions regarding the SEF and then pointed out that its not for Ofsted but a personal learning guide - err so why spend so much time on it then?
She reccommened I have a booklet about child protection - regardless of the fact that I had pages of info in my folder, and that I increased the amount of multicultural toys on the premises.
She said I had a good understanding of EYFS and safeguarding the children and was really happy with my paperwork. She was also happy about my removal of the plug socket covers and acknowledged that there is no need to have written risk assessments for everything - although it is deemed good practice (I had written ones for everything).
Despite all that, and despite the fact that she had to search for something to give as a recommendation - I got a Good and not an outstanding!
Little J was perfectly behaved and "performed" beautifully bless her!

Am pleased with the Good, but at a little bit of a loss to see where any improvements could be made really - and she didn't have any concerns about any of it.
Ah well - thats me finished now - I'll be retired before the next one is due LOL

Well done on the result. Shame not outstanding if she was struggling to find things. Interestingly my pre-reg inspector came down on me like a ton of bricks about the fact that I had 1 plug socket that had no cover! (did explain that I would get it sorted before taking on any children) They all have different agendas me thinks!
You can relax now for another 3 years. Big glass of vino tonight???

Could you please pm me the name of the inspector who told you that you don't need written risk assessments? I have info from a number of Ofsted inspectors and the Directorate that they must be in writing. It also says on a number of Ofsted reports on the Ofsted website that childminders have been given unsatisfactory for keeping children safe or actions to improve because they are failing to meet the requirements by not having written RAs. I would like to query that further with Ofsted and it will be useful to have a name for reference thank you!

I go by this document which says you must keep a written record of risk assessment.

The documents on Ofsted's website as indiciated earlier in this thread clearly state that written RA's are required.
"quote"
This factsheet sets out the records, policies and assessments that childminders must make and to keep.
The EYFS does not ask childminders to keep written policies and procedures except where the law covers both childminders and other childcare. These few times are listed in our booklet Are you ready for your inspection. (see note below) All childminders should have a copy of this document. In general the requirements are no more difficult to meet than the previous National Standards.
The Childcare Register says that childminders must have some policies and records in writing and those childminders on that register or both registers must make sure that they hold that information.
The EYFS
We do not ask childminders to have extra documents to deliver the EYFS, except for those they must hold by law.
Welfare requirements
Childminders must keep the following records in writing:
the name, home address and date of birth of each child
the name, home address and telephone number of the child’s parent
the name, home address and telephone number of everyone living or working in the premises where the childcare is provided – or the part of the premises where the childcare is held
a daily record of the hours the child attends
a record of accidents that happen on the premises
a record of any medicine given
the date and details of any medicine given and who gave the medicine
a record for parents to sign, to say that staff can give medicines (see note below)
a record of their risk assessment
From this you can clearly see that you DO have to have written Risk Assessments in place and as there are a lot of new childminders, registered or registering, everyone needs to be diligent and think very carefully before adding or replying to threads, reporting about what Ofsted Inspectors do/do not actually say.
Personally if I do not agree with something I go and check my facts and in this case I believe the information your reported that your "inspector" had said is incorrect.
Like Sarah I would like to follow this up and would like the name of the inspector because if we don't have to have written RA's then I would like to take it up with the Bristol region and maybe we can stop too.

Personally i am with debbie and sarah on this, i wish it were just risk assessments that inspectors seem to have differing opinions, standards or facts about!
If in hertfordshire i could avoid writing down so much i would be very grateful, this forum has made me naughty, it is so much more fun to sit on here than doing paperwork.
Not sure what i did to fill my time before.
Well done on your good,

My inspection was very similar - over 4 hours, one tiny recommendation - good overall - not even one outstanding - so does that mean if I follow the recommendation I will get outstanding next time.
She said my next inspection will be in 3 or 4 years then commented on my picture of Tobermory (Balamory)on the wall and I said hopefully I will be living there by then - not retired but hopefully not still Childminding looking at the comments on here about the Care Commision!

Have to admit I was a bit upset with my inspector. She only moved off the chair to go upstairs and check the bathroom. She didn't look in the garden, I use my dining area of kitchen/diner to mind in and have posters photos etc stuck on the walls and ends of cupboards which she couldn't have seen properly. I asked if she wanted to look in the garden at the equipment I have in the storage shed or the wendy house, but she just looked out through the kitchen window and didn't go out.
Didn't check first aid, fire blanket, smoke alarm check etc. My recommendation was to do training on special needs and also diversity. I pointed out that if i had a child with special needs I would obviously do any training that was necessary, but apparently its better to have already done some before taking on a child with special needs!
