Does anyone have any worthwhile tips for seeking a temporary variation? I would like to know the best way of going about it. Any one had a variation refused?

I had my variation refused point blank, i wanted to look after 4 under 5 for 2 days. The inspector refused straight away. So I went down the route of getting an assistant. She started last week and its so good. I can get alot more done now. But I would try to get a variation first, what are you wanting?

I think it depends on the reason for wanting a varation.
If it's for continuity they are more likely to grant it, but if it's just to take on an extra child they won't normally do it.
When I had a variation from 3 to 4 under 5s I explained why (mum changed working hours), I gave a list of the children I cared for & their ages, clearly explained who I would have on each day and talked through how I would manage a typical day (use of double buggy, borrow a second highchair etc). It was granted with no problem.

If its for continuity of care (such as taking on a sibling) or short term (to cover overlapping of contracts) you stand a chance of getting it. You need to write a letter detailing the ages of all the children (including your own) together with the times you will have them in your care - easiest way is to draw up a simple table. You also need to include what equipment you have and how you will meet their needs etc. An inspector might give you a call as well.
In the past I have applied for 2 under 1s - which was refused and one for a sibling which was granted and one for an overlap of contracts for 15 working days which was granted.
The more information you give the better but if its just to take on a new child its unlikely they would grant it.

Thanks.
I have 2 under 5's of my own and care for two under 5's - one M T W and F and the other on a Th - the 2nd child has fetal alcohol syndrome and his mother needs to start working on a friday too (she is a gp and required by the needs of the service she works in). The child has language problems and would find another setting difficult to take to. It will only be 1 day a week until september and even then the 1st child doesnt always come on a friday and my own son goes to nursery for the afternoon. It works out at a few hours generally.. I guess I will need to link evidence of my ability to the 5 outcomes and prove it will have no negative effect.
Do I write or email??

You can write or email but if you email, you have to print it off, sign it, scan it and then email it!

I scanned a signature in and then insert it into the letter - much easier!

I can do that, huzzah for computers!
