Why doesn't the system allow excel spreadsheets to be uploaded as attachments?

I do a lot of my list in excel and would love to share if I could.

don't know, what are their endings? e.g.

.doc
.jpeg

and such like.

I thought excel sheets had been shared before :(

They are .xls format Pauline.
