Hi

I have only been registered since 18Jan. I havent yet had my first 6month inspection. I have 2 children myself (aged 5 (not EY's) and aged 1 (EY's)) but..... I have been approached by a lady down the road who wants me to have her youngest child full time (07:30 to 17:00). They child is in the EY's (aged 1) I also childmind a 6 year old part time but various days. I am currently registered to have 4 children but no more than 2 in the EY's. But since having the child (from beginning of feb she has now asked if i would also take her daugher (aged 4- instead of her sending her to nursery!) So if i was to take on the other child that would put me 1
child over.

Soooooo basically i was wondering what you think my chances are of getting a variation already?

Any help really appreciated!!!

Its always worthwhile asking - they may say no but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I would make siure that you give them a full account of how you are going to cope with the extra child e.g.
Times children are with you
Have you looked after the children before
Will you be leaving the house at whilst you have them - if so risk assess the journey for Ofsted
How long will the variation be needed for - i.e. is anyone having a birthday soon which will remove the need for the variation shortly?

Be a full as possible with your info and see what happens - if they say no don't be upset about it and don't let you put off asking again in the future.

As the variation is for continuity of care you might stand a chance of getting it.

You need to make your "case" as strong as possible - detailing how you will cope with the ages of the children, getting around, sleeping etc. Perhaps ask the mum you're needing the variation for to write a letter of support.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

I also have 2 children and am in the same position as you. my cert also says I can care for no more than 4 children but that doesn't include my own. therefore if I have read your note correctly you are still within your numbers if you take this new child. you should be able to have 6 under 8's at a time, but 2 of them will be yours. give ofsted a quick call to check. the only issue you may have is your council may make you apply for planning permission. ours does!

I've been childminding for just over a year now and i asked for a variation to allow me to have 4 children under 5yrs (this was only for half an hour while i picked one child up and took another to school) and they said no. If i already had the child's sibling they would have allowed it. I asked if there was any point in appealing but she said they wouldn't change their minds. You may as well ask as they may allow your variation, just make sure you put in the letter all the ages and how your going to accommodate the child. Hope this helps

I understand from other members that there is now a form to complete for variations rather than writing a letter.

Give them a ring and they will send one out to you - 08456 404040.

Good luck :D

hi im sorry but im slightly confused with this from what you have written it doesnt seem as if you would be over numbers the four children you are allowed does not include your own children iv broken down what you have written and correct me if its wrong but iv got it as follows

in eyfs age
your child aged 1
mindee aged 1

possible 4 year old sibling to mindee

over eyfs age
your own child age 5
mindee age 6

this would be in your numbers 3 under 5 and 3 over including your own im sure this is right meaning you would not need a variation as the number of children that you can mind shown on your certificate does not include your own

Thank you all so much for your replies.

I didnt realised that the certificate numbers didnt include my children, so it says i can have 4 children of which only 2 can be from the EY's, so does the EY's part include my children? Cause if it doesnt then as you say i'll be fine!! (which is very exciting!!)

Can someone confirm the above for me pls.

Thanks so much!
