Pardon my ignorance, but why do we associate scarecrows with autumn?

What a good question!

I wonder if it’s something to do with harvest time (end of Sept/Oct?) Near my son’s girlfriend’s house is a corn field. The corn looks ready to harvest now so I guess, traditionally, a scarecrow would have been used at this time of year to scare the birds away from the ripening crops.

But they are used all year round ? So I don’t know why we think of them as a autumn thing.

Mumofone, I bought a lovely scarecrow garden ornament (on a stake that you shove in the ground) from Home Bargains for £1.50 (or something very close) the other week, so I am determined to use him soon! I won't keep him permanently in my garden because he probably wouldn't last very long, but he is lovely. They have a whole selection.
