Hi, I was just wondering if anyone inspected by Ofsted around September 2013 (e.g. before new grading system came in) and found to be Satisfactory, as I was, has been reinspected recently? Or has anyone in the same boat had a call from Ofsted to say that their inspection is imminent?

I am just trying to figure out if my next inspection is years away, or (as in those graded "Requires Improvement" October 2013 onwards) it might actually be due (under the 12 months reinspection criteria).

(Bit baffled!)

Thanks,

L

I really do not think there is any way to try to predict when your inspection will happen... Maybe look at your tea leaves or maybe there is a way of telling by studying how the cows are lying in a field or something?

Even if one thing was done in one region does not follow that the same would happen in your region anyway.

You could phone Ofsted and ask but, really I'd just try to put it to the back of your mind and work everyday in a way that you'd proud to be seen by an inspector. Keep up to date with your paperwork at all times and do a SEF now and then.

Relax and enjoy the job.

Thanks - I really appreciate that. I'm trying to be ready every day just in case - but there's always something I need to get on top of! Today, it was getting the garden nice again after the recent awful weather. I've also been catching up on progress reports/2 year reviews all weekend. SEF is next. Almost there!

Ofsted are really behind with their inspection programme...shortage of staff makes it worse !

The cycle of current inspections ends 2016...there are providers who have been waiting up to 5 years and more ...so I would say you are safe...unless there is a serious complaint against you...or something else ....so relax

Also remember Ofsted have moved the goal post for 1st inspection...this is now WITHIN 30 months from registration as they want to allow providers to embed good practice...I know CMs about to go over that 30 months limit

I think no one believes that it is for the sake of good practice....in fact we are concerned bad practice will embed too.

Another thought is why is Ofsted so keen on CMs agencies? because it would alleviate the number of inspections they need to do

if you really want to get an update in your area ...ring your EY team as they will know what is happening as they have constant communication with Ofsted

Thanks, Simona.

There's a new CDO (Development Officer) in my area, so I've invited her out to see me at the end of this week. Hopefully I'll get an idea of timing then.

I've also taken the liberty of requesting a place on the Ofsted 'Getting to Good' courses, as I haven't been offered one, but thought, why not?
(Perhaps this will trigger something? You never know :D)

The 'Getting Good' Ofsted seminars are not available to CMs...at the moment
This discrepancy has been flagged up to Ofsted who are now considering including CMs....or so they said recently

We asked Ofsted at the London OBC and we will need a reply on this...my association is aware of this too.
Let us know what your DO tells you.

Your reinspection will also consider which grade you received....RI means Ofsted will come around sooner but not for Good or above.
This was reinforced in one of Ofsted's recent publication in response to Good Inspections for all consultation.
I'll go and search for that and post it.

Thanks, Simona. I got Satisfactory at my September 2013 unannounced inspection (and this was only about a week before the 'requires improvement' grade came in).

Thanks for drawing my attention to this slide Simona.

Its good to see that Ofsted are consistent. As mentioned in an earlier comment I was graded satisfactory/RI in May 2013. I'm already 9 months over their timescales.

Look at this Ofsted factsheet 'Inspecting EY providers' Section 82 pp22-23

82. Nurseries and pre-schools judged as requires improvement will normally be reinspected within 12 months. They will have two years to get to good. A nursery or pre-school that has been judged as requires improvement at two consecutive inspections and is still not good at its third inspection is likely to be judged inadequate.
This does not apply to childminders, childcare on domestic premises, before and after school care, holiday schemes or crèches.

It may explain why you have gone over the 12 months...the slide does NOT say this about CMs unfortunately.
Also other providers are re inspected by Ofsted itself while CMs by Tribal or Prospect...I believe this is still the case and one many are unhappy about when they decided to bring reinspection in-house

Thanks again.

To be fair I'm not bothered either way. I was of the mind that inspections are a positive occurrence until I actually had mine. I'm sure the inspector was having a bad day, she was rude and still working to EYFS 2012 in May 2013. But hey, it was a while ago now and I'm still as full as I would like to be, so it doesn't seem to be affecting business.

I am sure I will get apprehensive when I get the call again ready for the next one but what's the worst that can happen? I get the rude one again. Thing is this time I am much more sure of myself and would call them to their face. As complaining gets you no where, they close ranks.

I like your attitude....Yes!...get confident enough to challenge where appropriate as the inspectorate has been found wanting in the past
There is room for improvement in any industry including Ofsted

Beware of challenging too much, though. My last one (unannounced) - my third - actually left mid-way through the inspection as I argued every point she made. Didn't get me anywhere but still glad I stood up for myself - I'm not really that argumentative, but her agenda was clear from the moment she walked in my door. I can't believe they can do that (iTribal) - she told me the grade pretty much when she arrived, then just kept criticising anything that I did with the children without seeing the educational benefit, and then used that/those points to justify the grade she had so clearly already decided upon before she even set foot in the door. Funnily enough, she phoned me after leaving to give me my grade - she chose the time I was out on the school run to call so she could leave it as a message. Nice!

On my very first inspection, I was so nervous that I actually managed to tip a whole cup of tea into the inspector's laptop. And you'll never believe it, but I got the same inspector for my second inspection! (And she could not have been nicer!)

(If I get my third inspector again, remind me to make a whole pot of tea this time!:laughing::laughing:)

I contacted Ofsted recently to ask about the dates of the cycles. I cannot find the email (typical!!!)

But I think the dates ran

Current cycle September 2012 until August 2016
Previous cycle September 2008 until August 2012

You could in theory be inspected in September 2008, and not be done again until August 2016. But I think there is some luck being drawn out of the hat involved.

I was inspected October 2008 ... still waiting ... despite moving house twice, 260 miles away! (I remember thinking dd will be 6 next time (she was 3 and I couldn't believe how old she would be ....) she is now almost 10 !!!)

My local early years bod spoke to ofsted who said inspections were being done in the following order ;
Prospective/New childminders and complaint driven inspections as required.
Childminders with lowest grade moving up to highest, but also ... dependant upon number of inspections ... so a childminder with only one previous inspection will be inspected before a childminder with 2 previous inspections...these will then be done so a childminder with 2 goods will be inspected before a childminder with good and then outstanding ..etc does that make sense?
However it is also in the whim of the computer randomly chucking names out!
Talking to a recently ex inspector ... there are not enough of them and when they had to do lots of complaint inspections, it really delayed normal inspections. She retired as too much pressure and not enough support. Although she said she'd heard the latest training had been good!

Much appreciated, guys.

(Sarah had also posted something similar, so looks like it will be a while for me (unless I get a complaint - DoG forbid!!!)

I'm trying to be ready every day, though, just in case. Now where did I put those latest notes for my ever-changing SEF? :D

All the best,
