I've heard a lot of rumours that when the EYFS starts in september that Ofsted will carry out inspections on childminders who are not due an inspection to make sure they are implementing the EYFS. Does anyone know if there is any truth in this or am I panicking for no reason. I am not due an inspection for another 2 years and I thought I would have lots of time to settle into the EYFS so that by the time my inspection comes around I will be an expert on it.

I heard the same

I heard even if you have had an inspection this year that they could still inspect you come Sept or not long after

I also heard that they want to inspect EVERY childminder asap under the new EYFS

With how slow they are at the moment though - not sure if there is any truth in it

There will always be rumours going around but I did have some paper work last week through the post that did indicate that the above was correct
I will see if I can find it and put it here

hi

As you know I had my inspection on Monday, the inspector said she wanted to do my inspection before Sept so that I didnt get an inspection close to the EYFS coming into force....she also said that my next inspection will be within 3 years which I guess is what they have to say, I didnt get the feeling there would be another inspection soon, its taken a year (instead of the 4-6months) to get my first inspection :jump for joy: :jump for joy: but who knows

This is what my paper work said ......

"However, Ofsted will start inspecting against the EYFS when it becomes law on 1 September 2008 . Each setting has to be inspected within a prescribed period from the start of the new inspection cycle. Ofsted have not yet decided what the time period will be for childminders but expect it to be with in the first year"

This was from my early learning team

But you know what its like .......... lots of stories flying around

I guess we will have to wait and see!!!

I went on a training course at few weeks about about how Ofsted will inspect after September and the lady that was running the course (she was from the local early years team) said that they don't actually HAVE to give you any notice at all of an inspection, they could just turn up like they BUT they don't generally like to do that with childminders as they understand that we are in and out all day so don't want to risk us not being in and it being a waste of their time. But that they could ring up one morning and ask if you are in that day because they want to come and do an inspection.

She also said that their inspections run on a 3 year cycle but that is their 3 year cycle not 3 yearly for us so you could be at the start of one 3 year cycle but then in 3 years time when their cycle starts again you could end up being at the end of their cycle so effectively you COULD go up to 6 years between inspections although it is very unlikely you would go that long.

Some stuff I am using for the SEF says we should all aim to have our SEF online for September because inspections will start for eyfs from 1st Sept and it's best to be ready.

Oh I'm really worried now, I'm feeling so overwhelmed by everything and don't know where to start. Although I got a good for my first inspection a year ago I feel if I where inspected now I may not get a good not because I'm failing the children but on my paperwork, I don't seem to have enough time to do it all and that's not including EYFS

I can't imagine Ofsted have the man power to inspect us all again. I too had an inspection recently and the Ofsted lady at the time hadn't been on any training courses adn I knew more about the EYFS than she did. So i wouldn't worry

Surely if Ofsted inspected everyone this year from Sept, due an inspection or not, Wont they have problems getting round to see everyone within the year and again it happening in 3 years time? meaning that there will be no inspections nowhere during the other 2 years....Does that make sence?

Makes perfect sense... they will do the worries first, the unsatisfactories etc.

One suggestion is they will do it by postcode - everyone in one area all at once.

Nobody knows yet though for sure.

The thing is to be ready with your SEF ... it's like the lottery... it might be YOU! :panic:

i am not worrying too much at the moment as in nursery World this week it says EArly Years disrupted by pay freeze dispute.

apparently Ofsted inspectors in ealry years and social care are locked in a dispute over a three year pay freeze which is disrupting nursery adn childmidnign inspections

unions have warned that teh crisis is also hitting preparations for the new inspection framewrok for the EYFS which starts in SEpt.

inspectors are currently working a 36 hour week to rule refusing to do overtime or use hteir personal cars for business which means that many are unable to complete wrk allotted to them

My inspector the other week asured me that it would be 3 years before I had my next inspection.

I asked her if that was right because of the EYFS. She told me that because I'd recieved an Outstanding I wouldn't be priority for and early EYFS inspection. She also told me that during their training they were told they would be going back to those that had got inadequate and satisfactory first even if they had just had an inspection.

She then reasured me yet again that it would be the full 3 years (possibly even longer) as everything was going to take so much longer as they get to grips with the EYFS and they'll probably fall behind quite quickly!

I was told at my inspection in May that I would not be inspected for another 3 years as they have people in the cycle due for inspection next year, the year after etc and they cant possibly inspect all the childminders in England in one year.

I was also told that the inspectors would be working in pairs for the first 3 months on inspections to ensure they are getting it right and that a boss from higher up would be double checking one in five inspections.

I rung OFSTED about the SEF and asked when I need to fill it in, a very stupid question maybe but she didnt know the answer and had to call me back lol Anyway, she said it is not compulsary to fill it in and I dont need to worry about it until my next inspection which is due in 2011 ( they were her actual words lol)

When my inspector left yesterday she said i won't hear again for 3-4 years so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that is true.

Some of the confusion is coming from the fact that in the Voluntary Childcare Register details it says that inspections will take place at any time, not necessarily 3 yearly. But if you are a childminder working with under 8's your main register will be the compulsory register which says inspections will take place approx. 3 yearly.

At my inspection today she said it would be about 3 years until my next one - that's if I don't move and need one in the mean time though.
