Hello all! This is my first post so hope its in the right place!
I am a qualified nanny/maternity nurse (for 30yrs!) and currently look after an 8 month old baby half the week and twins of almost 2 who have been with me since they were 8 months old.
I am looking into childminding as I have the twins on a shift pattern which means I work some weekends and evenings. I have 4 teenage kids from 12-20 yrs old so it means I'm not seeing them much during that time.

Anyway, as a nanny I'm voluntarily registered with Ofsted so have first aid/pli etc but does anyone know if I can be registered as both a nanny and a childminders please?
If I can I'd like to nanny for one family bit child mind for the other more unsociable ones.
Thanks in advance!

Im sure I read on a post someone else did both, 2 days cm at their own house then 2 days nannying at children's house. Call ofsted and ask maybe, you would have to register as a childminder and do la course etc, there were several nannies on the course I was on to become a childminder

Of course you can....look into your financial affairs though because as a nanny you are probably employed but would be self employed as a CM
Not difficult so hope you can get someone to advise you on that
:thumbsup:good luck

You can be self-employed as a nanny, but only for temporary/ adhoc posts. I would call HMRC and get it confirmed. The person I spoke to at HMRC said it was fine and not a problem. Other people have had different answers. I worked for 12 months as a self-employed nanny. You might need to separate insurance policies. Check with your insurer- Morton Michael were happy to insure me as a self employed nanny.

Thank you so much for sharing that...I have found it impossible to get the same answer when I asked as people differ in opinion
Pleased to hear nannies can be self employed too...makes sense really

Worth remembering it is only for temp and ad hoc work. I charged a rate which meant I was earning a good amount after tax and ni. Also, my wage was very much our 2nd income. I needed flexibility over a reliable income. There are plenty of parents out there who want to take on a permanent nanny but who are not prepared to take on the responsibility and cost of properly employing them (i.e paying tax, national insurance and holidays).

Just to add you can work as employed and self-employed at the same time- so as employed nanny (or any other job you like) and a self-employed childminder. There is space on the tax return to add the details of your employment.
