Hi, just wondering if anyone knows for sure if we have to complete a 12hour first aid course or whether a 6 hour course is acceptable for CSSIW? I have emailed CSSIW about this but not had a reply. A few cms in my area have said the 6hour is ok but others have said that we need to complete the 12hour course.
Thanks

When I registered 2 yrs ago with CSSIW I was told it didn't matter about the hours just the fact it was a pediatric one x

I like that idea but I get the impression that different inspectors have different views - as usual! Thanks

Until this year our LA has only done first aid for childcarers (6 hours) - this year they are doing paediatric 1st aid (12 hours - 8 on Sat, 4 on an eve!)

It was always ok to do it as long as it was a child based one. things change but I haven't heard.

Thanks for your replies, I have finally heard form CSSIW. Here is what hey said…

NMS 10:14 of the Child Minding and Day Care Regulations 2012 states that : Child minders must have undertaken training in First Aid for infants and young children. All first aid qualifications should be kept up to date.

We usually recommend the 12 course. However, if your training requires updating and a 12 hour course is not available, we would accept the 6 hour course. I would always recommend the 12 hour course however, when possible, as a matter of good practice.

I hope this helps clarify the situation for you.

xx
