I am a registered child minder, i am recieving Disabilty allowance (dla) and carer allowance . I have been doing this for a long time and have look aftered loads of children. I currently have 6 that I look after . I recently gave my registration no to a parent who then applied to the tax credit people , they rejected her claim and got told I cannot look after her children as I am getting dla. But when I spoke to the tax credit people they told me it has nothing to do with dla and has nothing to do with carer allowance . So why did the lady who rejected the claim tell me I cannot look after children due to the fact I'm recieving dla ???

Hi,

I think it depends on the level of DLA you been awarded and if you declared you are a childminder when started to claim for DLA.

Some levels of DLA are paid out for people who cannot work so lady on phone who refused claim may have felt that the level of DLA you receive means you couldn't be working as well.

I would arrange a meeting with a Benefit Advisor where they can help you find answers as if DLA don't know you been working and you are not able to work on level you receive you don't want your payments to end.

Big hugs and hope you get sorted soon.

Also read up on Carers Allowance - Work (Full or Part Time)

It states 'You are able to earn £100 a week after deductions have been taken off and money is allowed for expenses. If earnings exceed £100 a week then Carers Allowance will cease'

So think this means you can't be earning more than £100 a week if you claiming Carers Allowance.

The fact that they rejected HER claim has nothing to do with you surely. It is her claim and her information used - all she needs from you is your ofsted reg no, I dont understand why your benefits come into someone elses claim. But I am confused how you are able to work in what is really quite a physically and mentally challenging role and still get the DLA allowance and carers allowance but this is your business and I am sure you have the correct paperwork in place and ofsted are aware of your disability. A good idea to see your benefits advisor.

As for the parents unable to get WFTC because of your circumstances - this sounds strange!! and rather unlikely, Are you being told the whole truth by the parents? and why would any government office divulge your benefits to a third party? I don't think they would under data protection or Did you tell the parents you claimed benefits? This all sounds a bit awkward!

That doesn't sound right to me, surely they can't tell a parent what benefits you are claiming?

Im a little confused are you receiving DLA and then someone is claiming carers allowance for looking after you?

Surely it would be a breech of data protection if they told someone of your personal details - so I would be putting in a formal complaint.

edited to say I have read Koalas post and I agree does the parent know of your situation and is using tax credits as an excuse.
