I had my first insepection today, was so worried and have been preparing for days. She was really nice.
I registered last august and got awarded a satisfactory. Was a little gutted as she said I had 2 things out of place and I could have got a good. One being diversity and the other being outside more. I have 1 mindee at the moment aged 14 months so she gave me ideas of how to get out in the garden. Oh well, suppose I should be pleased!!

What did the inspector mean by 'diversity'?
Surely you're not expected to 'do' multicultural celebrations with one so young? (IMO they'd get nothing out of it at that age and it would be merely for Ofsted's benefit).
Or did the inspector mean your resources? I've been working since September so haven't had much time (or cash) to build up a lot of things. At the moment I have some dolls with different colour skin, happyland/duplo figures and books representing different kinds of people. Oh and lots of Orchard Toys games for when the LOs are a bit older. I always try and choose the 'inclusive' option if it's there and there are a few bits on my wish list for when I earn a bit more :)

I was the same. Worked as a civil engineer for 8 years sitting behind a desk.
First thing is it will not be as bad as you think! My main piece of advice would be to make sure you can answer all the questions in the Ofsted booklet they give you with their application pack. Not word for word but write the answers out and feel confident you could answer each one. The reason for this is it is very difficult to keep up with the inspectors questions and where you are in the booklet. It wouldn't look too good if after every question you ask the inspector to stop while you flick through your answers!
Don't go overboard with your home. The inspector won't check you have cleaned the oven for example!
Hope it all goes ok

Having some pictures or posters up of different cultures and ages and abilities goes a long way with Ofsted. There is also a good set of play people you can buy that includes a lady on a wheel chair and someone on crutches etc.(got ours from toy library) Then books such as Don't call me special . All can be bought on eBay. The programme on cbeebies with special in the name that includes children with special needs (forget the title)
At the very least some library books showing different cultures that you leave obviously on show.
Nb diversity includes different ages so we had family photos up too that Ofsted remarked on.
Hopefully other people will have suggestions.
Hi what do you mean about (diversity) sorry
Sorry as English is not my first language I am French

The other thing is of course music from different cultures and you tube clips. Global babies is a lovely hard back book showing babies from different cultures

In my last graded inspection I only got a 3 for diversity and could not (in retrospect) understand why, as I had LOADS of resources I was using.
However, Mrs O hardly looked at my toys and books! For next time around I'm making a Diversity folder which will list out every single book, toy, puzzle, poster etc where other cultures and/or disability are included. I have a Unicef calendar with all religious festivals marked on it, linked to seasonal craft and cooking too.
Does anyone else have any other ideas of how you give Mrs O her Diversity 'evidence'?
I have just had my copy of the report sent to me and feel quite :( I had various mulitcultural books, lots of different happyland figures and she has marked me down for this one thing! with a 14 mth old.... really?! Plus my own children are half chines!

Then it might be worth appealing and listing out your Diversity resources. I wish I had appealed, but I was very 'ground down' and less experienced in the ways of Ofsted first time round. My inspection was done by Mrs O known locally for being very harsh. She was quite rude and even said ' I don't believe you ' (regarding me eating my lunch with Mindees at a tiny Ikea table in my kitchen) !
So wish I'd been less intimidated and wimpy. You live and learn.

Just to add, that the big thing I learnt after my first inspection is that you have to point everything out to them. I assumed that they knew what they were doing and would 'notice' everything (ie: evidence)... Not so! Depending on who you get, you sometimes literally have to shove the evidence in front of them and spell it out. Next time I'm doing 'belt and braces' and producing far more documentation of stuff like learning resources. It's loads more work though...
