Yes, I'm looking for anything to reduce my tax bill (within reason!).

I read somewhere that second passenger you can claim 5p a mile - is that right?
I had 2 siblings I used to pick up/drop off. I have put down the 40p a mile. Can I claim further 5p a mile? All adds up!!

cheers.

I think this only applies if you have an assistant with you in the car you can then claim 50 p per mile

you can claim 45p a mile now though, it went up last year.

I thought the .45p a mile came in in 2011 so the .40p would be right for the return you are doing 10/11.

The only time you can claim the .05p is if you are taking an employed member in the car with you. That is my understanding - no colleagues or assistants.

Yes you're right the 45p did come in for 2011/12. I submitted my return for 2010/11 ages ago and have been updating my accounts for the current year today so had forgotten that.

Just to confirm, if you have your registered assistant in the car, you can claim 50p per mile?

Thanks,

A

No.

The only circumstances the additional 5p is relevant is when an employee (e.g. your assistant) is taking a colleague (e.g. another assistant or yourself) on a journey which is wholly for a business purpose. You can then pay the employee 45p per mile (50p from 6th April 2011) instead of 40p (45p from 6/4/11), as a self employed person you can never (under current regulations) claim the additional 5p for your own journeys.

Thanks for clarifying Mr Anchovy. Haven't put any mileage down on my books yet, but I've defianetly used the car in the last month (registered 5th Dec 11) will go and fill that in (and check historical posts about how I do it before doing so).
