How to treat a start up grant on Tax returns

Hi
I received a £300 start up grant for the local authority when I became registered last year.

My question is how do I treat this Grant and the expenditure relating to it on a tax return form?

I was told to put the grant in income and then put your expenses through under expenses

Depends what it is for, if it was for capital expenditure you don't have to put it through your accounts (but the capital expenditure doesn't go through either obviously).

This can be useful if you have spent money on something you wouldn't otherwise be able to claim, like a new front gate.
