So am I right that you cannot fill in a short tax return on line.

I don't think that is right, unless it has changed very recently. I did my last short tax return on line. I'm sure somebody will know for definite.

yes you can, i did mine this year and last year on line and as its past 31st october its now the only way you can do it

i did mine online a few weeks ago and made the payment due straight afterwards so unless something has changed in the last month or so you should be able to do it!!!

can someone tell me.... when they give you the final amount of tax that is owed online do you have to pay it there and then or is there a time limit :)

I think the tax and any outstanding NI due must be paid by Jan 31st.

Yes you are right Carol!! I just paid mine so that I didn't have to worry about making sure the money was still there after Christmas :eek:

Just to be clear, as a self employed person you have to fill in two tax returns, one for the business and one for any other income you have.

You CAN fill in the short version for the business (SA103S (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/sa103s.pdf)) online, but NOT the short version of the other income (SA200) - you have to fill in the SA100 (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/sa100.pdf) instead.

HMRC only send out SA200s in limited circumstances; it was introduced shortly before tax returns went online under pressure on the then Inland Revenue to make it easier to fill in your return but now you can do it online that is MUCH easier so I would always recommend online.
