Does anyone have a policy on parents picking up children under the influence of alcohol?it was mentioned as one to have at my inspection yesterday.

Oh for goodness sake - no I don't but common sense would tell you that you wouldn't release a child to a drunken adult.

Yes we do, we ask that parents consider making alternative arrangments for their children to be collected if they have been drinking.

Common sense isnt common to everyone

According to Cheshire East it is something which should be included on the safeguarding / child protection policy.

Just add a few lines saying that if the person who comes to collect the child appears to be under the influence you will put the needs of the child first and continue caring for them until someone else is able to collect.

There is a fine line between hanging onto the child because you want to be sure s/he is safe and refusing to allow them to leave which is a criminal offence so you need to be clear with your wording that you are prioritising the child's safety.

Hth :D

very simular to our policy weve removed that drugs and alchol are readily avaiable to young children as we dont have children over 5. Wouldnt want to scare parents that their 2 yr olds are often going to face this situation.
