kids here never tire of lego / megablocks etc and happyland stuff. balls of any sort, cardboard boxes and art stuff.

Keep to the basics. I had a few bits then have added to them as I have gone along depending on the age of the children I have been minding.

It depends what age group you're working with and I wouldn't buy too much to start off with until you know what work you've got coming in.

Check out toy libraries in your area - you could borrow toys if you need to. Also car boots and charity shops are good hunting grounds for low cost toys.

Wooden blocks are the most played with toy for children of 6 months to 7 years here (and even my 14 YO will pitch in and build the LOs intricate towers!)

Art and craft stuff

Home made playdough

Open ended stuff rather than things that only have one use

Have a look in net mums, some people give toys away, as long as you collect!

There's always freecycle too if you have a group in your area.

Start saving all your boxes, kitchen rolls, yoghurt pots etc.
A tea set (if you add real water it will keep them occupied for longer)
Buy glue sticks in bulk - it's always cheaper and you'll get through loads of them!

car boot sales and NCT sales are really great for picking up well-priced second hand toys that yo can check throroughly before you buy!

Have fun!

i'm banned from the boot sales by my hubby!
