Are you talking about the themes and commitments of the Eyfs?
Or something else? :D

The 4 themes yes.
But in the big book 3.3 is something different, no wonder people get confused with eyfs!

The themes and commitments are linked to the Every Child Matters outcomes and stand alone really.
I use them for self evaluation - how I am doing against them and how I might do better.
I find some of them quite cumbersome and feel they have been stretched to fit which is a pity because the thinking behind them is sound.
I am not sure what else you are referring to with 3.3 though... the Eyfs statutory framework and guidance doesn't have numbers.

Oh those! I have read through them but more than that...
They are a re-hash of the statutory requirements really showing how it all fits together with the themes and commitments.
I wouldn't worry about them too much if I were you.
Best observations e-book is number 14 - it covers everything to do with observing children... or there's a mini which talks about the 'I CAN' method of observation.
Hth :D
