Hi,

I am just completing my booklet and wondered what people had written for the following question:

How will you support a child and their family who have very little understanding of spoken English? How will you communicate with the child and their parents?

All I can think of is to be patient with the child and family and help the child to learn English. Make sure everything that has been told to the parents is backed up with writing for them to take away and read and hopefully understand. Can anyone think of anything else?

you might ask your local EY team if they have any translated material in written form
you might source a translator via the EY team perhaps

you might do some dual language common phrases/flashcards to aid communciation

you might learn some of the language

use online translators (sparingly) but perhaps with some basics

use dual language books/posters etc

lots of gestures, showing/demonstrating
