Does anyone know anything about this.

I have been approached by one of the parents who has asked if she could employ me privately to look after her 2 children but in my home, like a nanny but not in their house.

I have asked Care Commission but as yet still got no reply.

Do you mean she wants you too contract to look solely after her children?

I've not heard of it but it sounds good but, if that's what it is, what will you charge?

I have never heard of it to be honest

But it sounds just like what a nanny would do

does this mean she does not want you to care for any other children? just hers?

never heard of this before, sounds like nannying.

Make sure you charge enough! especially if you can't take on any more children

angel, has it been a long day, u need to re-read the post sweety, lol.

to me being a childminder is just about the same as a nanny, we do all the domestic chores, such as needing to wash soiled clothes etc anyways. i cant see any difference myself, if we were a nanny we'd need to clean their house - u have your own to do anyways. what hours does she want u to work, is it bathtime and bedtime hours, as i personally wouldnt do this as a childminder but nanny's do.

sorry i cant be of more help

I can't see a problem, but you'd need to work out what you would earn at full cpacity & how much a nanny would charge & come up with an hourly rate!

I agree with everyone else if she wants you to care solely for her children fair enough but charge her a good amount per hour if it means you cannot take on any other children at the same time. Personally though I wouldn't do it because she may think of you as a nanny and try to tell you what to do and think she employs you. hope that makes sense

I'm not sure what you would get out of it? You'll be getting all the expenses & inconviences that come with working at home and none of the perks that a nanny might get. Wouldn't you be better off being self-employed as a Registered Childminder, even if you agreed not to take on any other children and negotiated an appropriate fee? Also, if you get given notice at some point in the future, you'd be all set up to advertise for new clients straight away.

And you will have expenses working in your own home that wouldn't apply if you worked in the child's home. A nanny working in the child's home has access to the family's fridge & store cupboard when preparing meals and the parent provides the child's toys & resources. Working in your own home would mean you would be subject to the high levels of wear and tear on your property and need to provide the relevant toys & resources just as a Childminder would do. You will also need the support from your family who have to share your home with minded children.

I'm not sure how the Care Commission differs from Ofsted but in England you would have to register with Ofsted for this arrangement.

Have you thought about the tax you might have to pay as an employee, with the parents doing your tax & NI? Many Childminders, being self-employed have little or even no tax to pay because of the high level of allowable expenses.

I think she is already registered as a childminder Susi, is that right Fiona?

Hi , yes I am already registered as a childminder and have cared for her 2 children for 3 months but the parent is now thinking about going to college on a fulltime basis which the college have agreed to pay her chilcare/nanny costs.

As far as I am aware the care would be during college hours. 8am to 5pm 5 days per week , term time only.

Eventualy got hold of Care Commission who said that Nannies dont come under them so wouldnt need to be registered to do it but would be able to take on kids during the school hols as i wouldnt have the other 2 kids to nanny/care for.

It could be good money , roughly £1,000 per month during term time and I normally take hols when the schools are off anyway so would only be an extra 4 weeks during the summer hols to worry about.

What do you think? Is it worth a gamble or should I just stick to the childminding and waiting on filling my spaces.

I think you have got to go with how you feel on this one.

You are already minding for this parent and this new arrangement could be great, especially if you have a good relationship with the parents already.

The money is good also and it fits in around your holidays.

Why don't you get all the info together like exact hours, exact money, who takes care of tax, whether you would have to end any other contracts etc,etc and then see how you feel.

You could also do a settling in period to see how it goes

Thanks polly, still dont know what to do as I love the 2 kids to bits but they stay about 10 miles away and I have my own 2 kids to take to nursery, 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon so there would be quite a bit of running about from one town to the other.

Would only have one contract to cancell but thats no hardship as its only 9 hours per week and some weeks I dont have the child at all.

Ive got to the New Year to decide what Im doing with it.

Sounds like you have a lot to weigh up there.

Hope all goes well - what ever you decide :)

Hi,
Just wondered if you'd made a decision?!

I have more or less decided not to do it. Didnt think it was worth the hassle with the nursery runs everyday as we would be spending half the day travelling.

Will just stick to what i know for just now. Money was really good but moneys not everything.

no money isn't everything if you feel it is the right thing not to go for it.

i am still confused about what the difference is though would you only have been minding for her kids but in your own home.

It was only to mind her kids at her house where I could take my own 2 with me. Think it was only to save her lifting her 2 little ones so early in the morning to come to me, it would be be going to her house and her kids could have a lie in.

Anyway, decided im not doing it as its not fair on the kids being in the car travelling half the day to and from nursery.
