Hi,

When I asked my insurance company if the class 2 business cover I had was ok for childminding - they first said yes and no extra change - but I asked them to put it in writing that the minded children would be covered for accident injury or death - they said No - that would be covered by my public liability insurance!

As I knew this not to be true I rang several other companies and got the same story - all were happy to cover until I said wanted it in writing.

I therefore phone NCMA and Morton Mitchel and both said class 2 was not sufficent!! I needed a specialist cover - such as they offer. Both quoted a very similiar price which was higher than my previous class 2 cover - but at least I know I have the right cover for the minded children.

So my advice is please check you have the right cover and get insurance company to put it writing that minded children will be covered.

Penny:)

I am with Churchill and I have my vocation on my certificate and Class 2 Business Use.

Anyone in my car is covered by insurance, why wouldn't the children be? What are you wanting them covered for (sorry confused)?

Might be worth trying them

About a year ago NCMA ran a story about Class 2 saying that it wasn't enough and from memory there was a follow up article retracting this as it was confusing.

When you phone either company now both say the same - Class 2 is not enough. one of them can't remember who - had a full page ad in a childcare mag recently saying the same.

I was told that if a child is injured or killed - because they are classed as fare paying passengers they would not be covered by my insurance.

As I said I rang a lot of companies and each time I asked the question I was put on hold and either told sorry no don't cover that or a very vague yes you are covered but we won't put that in writing.

I am not suggesting that others do not have the right cover but for peace of mind it might be worth checking.

Personally I thought it all a bit silly - but having worked for NCMA in the past, I know their legal team check everything very carefully and so for my peace of mind - I decided that I was not prepared to take the risk

The Company who advertise in Who Minds is Blu Fin formally 'Motorminder'

I have complained to NCMA on a number of ocassions about the scare approach that they seem to take with regard to 'Specialist' Childminding motor insurance, also the high profile they have in Who Minds. It is my view that other Insurers should be invited to advertize to offer us a more balanced view. To be fair though the Blu Fin Ads have been tonned down a lot and there are fewer of them these days but I will carry on puhing until there are other companies advertizing alongside them.

I don't know what their Policy Documents say now but certainly up to a year ago (my dh had insurance with them) the documents did not once mention Childminding or any special or additional cover offered that I don't have with Churchill.

One of the troubles is that different Insurance Companies seem to have slightly different cover offered by what are generally refered to as Classes 1, 2 or 3 Business cover, which can make it a bit like comparing Apples with Pears.

It is my understanding that if our mindees were considered as 'Fare Paying' customers then we would have to be registed with our Local Councils as Taxis and we don't.

I don't know anything about the cover that Morton Michel offer maybe someone who uses them could tell us?

I do know that a lot of childminders on the Forum are successfully and fully covered for their childminding businesses by a number of different companies and often for a much lower cost than Blu Fin.

Hello,
Didn't mention it before - but I actually took out car insurance with Morton Mitchel not NCMA and it says very clearly on certificate Social, Domestic and Pleasure Purposes AND use for hire or reward in connection with childcare activities', Morton Michel of course also provide cover for nurseries as well as childminders hence the wording.

As with all things in childminding we each make our own decisions about our business - my original post was just to raise awareness of possible issues with class 2 so that others could if they wish check out their insurance cover for themselves.
