Which day to terminate contract?

Hello

I need to terminate a contract with immediate effect due to non-payment of fees. Do I serve notice on the day fees due (next Monday) or can I do it over the weekend? Parent has already told me they will not be able to pay next week and have taken legal advice on this. Was advised to terminate but forgot to ask what day to do it on!
