i have gone back to the 1600s with my tree. I have been in touch with my great grandmas sisters great granddaughter. We talk regularly and have swapped pictures.

that side of the family dont seem to have moved very far....we all come from the manchester area.

My earliest relative is my great great great great great great great grandfather born in 1678 and called Parson Barratt

No, I didn't help Molly Angel, she had done that before I moved in near her.

I love doing it, love getting the certificates too but they're not £9.25 each so I won't be getting as many as I would like. I've got some original birth certs for my Grandad born 1887 and his father born 1866 on mum's side. We were a bit well off at one time apparently, Boot and Shoe Manufacturers in Leeds and my Dad's lot were farmers in North Yorkshire and Lancashire. Sadly not now.

Steve's family. Well! We have a physician and a drag queen!!! His poor Grandad was born into a theatrical family and from what I can find out, he was in the way so they 'gave' him away. All these years my outlaws have thought they were Moorhouse and they weren't, they were Uprights!!! :o Thank God I wasn't Mrs Upright!

We're looking forward to helping you Angel, get your names and dates and places sorted and we can start.

I started doing mine quite a few years ago but havent done much for a while. I hit a few brick walls even though some of my 'family' dont seem to have moved much (I can trace back to this area to about 1860 I think, then it was to the next county). I got one relative who, no matter how hard I try, I just cant 'kill off' - only dates to about 1900ish so shouldnt be that hard - if anyone wants to try and help please let me know as Ive no idea where to go next

Hopefully one of these days I will have the time to try and tie up some more loose ends - it seems my family were born in Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire areas mainly.

Oh and as for family secrets - definitely some juicy ones of those have come to light! You just never quite know what can of worms you will open doing this though - or how many family secrets people wont talk about

Its amazing what you turn up when looking for these rellies ... so be warned you could find some verrrrrry strange characters   and its not cheap ....but its such a thrill recieving a certificate, so much information and history on one piece of paper.

I actually found family i did not know even existed , aunties, uncles & cousins, as i was growing up it was just my mum and i, so sad.

So get your thinking head on Angel so that you can give us lots of info to make a start. Sue and i are looking forward to the challenge

i use ancestry.co.uk.

i am lucky because "heir hunters" were involved in the 1980s and had done a big chunk for me on one branch.

I love it....keep dipping in.

Its great to show my dad and aunty who are the last on one side...their grandfather died in a lunatic asylum of shell shock 2 years after the war ended. One of my great great great great grandmothers went through husbands like they were going out of fashion. She also seems to get younger at every census...funny!

I haven't touched mine in nearly 2 years.

What with setting up as a childminder, Ofsted and now my NVQ I can't afford to give the time necessary.

My mom has been doing her side it for about 3 years now and has gone back as far as the 1500's.

One day I will have time and will do more of DH and my dad's side. It is very addictive, just like this site

i have been doing Family Tree for nearly 10 years now and have got back to 1640's with one branch of the family and have a few sticking points that i keep chipping away atand via a distant relative who has been searhing for 20 years or so, the tree is extended to 1350 - which blows my mind. I have come across some really fascinating stuff and met some wonderful people and have some tremendous ancestors.

A good site to start out with is Genes Reunited - however, just because someone contacts you saying our trees are linked - always double check sources.
A tree (or link) is not confirmed until you have at least two peices of 'proof' - ie a certificate and a census record - x-ref EVERYTHING. Its to easy to head of down a route believing it right and its gutting to find out its all wrong. Any serious geneaologist will not take a tree unless its proved all the way through.

To start a tree - start with what YOU know - gather your proof, input names, dobs/dods/marriages/, places.
Then start (sensitively) probing family members - remember what older/other family members can tell you is only their recollections - they may not be strictly accurate, so again check the information and confirm it. I say sensitively because there may be secrets or things people don't want to talk about. Gather photos from relatives - check on the back for names/dates/places, go through the older generations stuff with them as it helps jog memories.

Ancestry.co.uk is a good place for information

It depends where you need to look - if you are Scotland then Scotlands People is a brilliant site. If you need to look abroad then Ancestry.com.
Lost Cousins and Find My Past are other good pay per view sites. The Channel Islands have some good specialist sites. If you are getting into Europe then France is a pain in the bum!!!

when you are searching, even fairly recently 1900's for instance - check on name variants - especially if you can't find your ancestors.

Its fascinating, frustrating, fun, and can be expensive as you start paying for records online and paper.

Once you start going

Daz has been doing his for a few years now but with working away all week he's put it on hold, it's very time consuming.

Didn't realise the certificates were that much Sue  Last time Daz had some they were £7.00 each!!!!

Good luck with doing yours Angel
