I do 2-3 obs per child per month, but it all depends on what we are doing some months its more, some months its less.

I have 3 under 5s as well but I only aim to do 2 obs a month on each child unless I have a wow moment to record!

i can do 2 in a day sometimes....then wont do one for a couple of weeks.

Mrs o was happy with this....she understood that kids go through "spurts" and then spend ages on the same task...i have even done an ob on a well executed task eg putting balls into boxes....and then used that ob to plan and develop.

Do you have to do planned obs or can they be spontaneous ??

I was on a course last night and was told to do spontaneous observations 3-4 times a week for a full timer and a focused observation once a month/per half term.

Ofsted said 1 observation per child per week....

hope this helps

did Ofsted say that when they visited you? If so, I think its a case of different inspectors saying different things - I do 1/2 a month per mindee and Ofsted were more than happy with that

As for 3-4 times a week per mindee I would spend forever doing paperwork when I have to link it all up so no way would I attempt to do that many
