After careful consideration and tonnes of research into gastric bands and gastric bypass surgery, I've booked my surgery.

I'm having a gastric bypass on 14th September this year. I'm strangely excited about it!

I need to loose 9 stone to get a BMI of under 25. It's going to be hard work but I will get there. I will be healthy and see my children grow up and have children of their own.

Roll on September!

Lucy I wish you all the best!!! How exciting!!! Do you have to do any liver cleansing/lose any weight so your liver will be smaller, prior to surgery?

I saw the bariatric surgeon today, nice bloke (Italiano!), seems to know what he's doing! Always a good thing ;)

Surgery will be in 2/3 months time, need to do a whole liver cleansing thing and lose 2 stone before then, which I will try my hardest to do.

I have cut down my working week from 5 days to 4, and have not filled a vacancy that's come up, to alleviate the workload (and stress)... which will all aid my asthma/need for the tabs. Loss of £££ but better for my health, and that takes priority right now.

I was told to take pics in of when I was a child, at university etc.... to show different ages and stages of weight... the surgeon was amazed I was 62 kgs at 22. Most of his patients have had weight probs since childhood. He said he had *met* prednisolone before (my steroids), so understands my medical need. So happy. Am reassured.

There are 3 types of surgery I could have, I wanted the most intrusive one - which works best... he thinks it might be too risky with my dodgy lungs and respiratory probs, so we might go for the 2nd best option. He will chat to the respiratory specialist and anaesthetist once they've seen me, and they'll decide what's the best (and safest) route. Next appt 14 June.

It's so exciting isn't it!

I'm so pleased your appointment went well. Hope you get the go ahead for the type of surgery you want.

My next appointment is 14th July where I'll meet the surgeon and the anaesthetist.

I will have to do a pre-op diet. Will be low fat and low carbs. Because I'm going private I don't have to loose a set amount of weight. The nurse said I'd naturally loose a bit on the pre-op diet and not to stress about it.

Like you I've cut my work back in preparation for the surgery and recovery. In September I'll just have before and after schoolers so I'm hoping to have a maximum of 3 weeks off, the school is less than 100m away so it won't be a stressful walk. I also have an assistant (my mum) so wouldn't be alone with the children in the early days.

It's less than 15 weeks to my surgery now. It can't go by quickly enough!

I'm struggling to think that in 12 months time I'll have a whole new wardrobe of clothes, not a single item I currently own will fit me! I even bought a new top yesterday and when I got home thought what a daft idea it was. It'll be too big by October!

Keep in touch. x

The cutting back the work is such a good idea isn't it??? My hubby will also take some time off to be with me for the first week I start work again... to do carrying and heavier stuff (I have 3 or 4 under 3s!lol).

It's likely we'll be having surgery round the same time. :clapping: We can compare notes as we go along if you like? If you'd like to do so via private email, pm me your email addy and I'll send you mine

The clothing thing is just amazing isn't it? I thought this last week, when I bought a top too. It'll be such a pleasure to just be able to walk into ANY retailer and not have to hunt high and low to see if they stock my size

Wishing you all the best in the next little while with weight loss pre-op... and let me know how your appt goes. x

I am really thinking hard about having surgery, need to stop kidding myself that I can lose the weight on my own, I don't know what the Dr will be like though, he is one of those who is a health freak, and says it should be done with will power alone, how does he know what we feel like, only people in our condition can know what agonies we go through every day.
Sorry to sound so maudling.

I wish you both well (though couldn't go to such extreme measure's myself - I lost 81/2 stone mostly with WW - kept it off - then 2 pregnancies later need to loose 5 - have lost 7 lbs so am heading in the right direction). My DH had 12 stone to loose & he is half way there - by this time next year we should both be at goal weight - fingers crossed)...anyway sorry for rambling - just wanted you to know of real life cases where serious amounts of weight were shifted before the point of no retunn as it were! TYhough i am sure you have both thought long & hard & if you have decided this is the best thing for you then go for it. Out of interest did you both see this article - certainly gives pause for thought!

oh girls I think you are both so brave. I know someone who had this done 2 Summer's ago and she's never regretted it, looks fab and has so much confidence now so I wish you both all the best.

Try to lose as much as you can before though as this will obviously make surgery as safe as possible.

You are incredibly brave. I had loads of health problems this year, and my GP constantly told me it was because of my weight.
I kept asking about gastric bypass and she passed it off without discussing it further. She really wasn't very helpful telling me instead of eating a huge baked potato, I should have a new potato.
She gave me no diets sheets, and any info at all. I was really struggling an hit 14st 10 in January. I managed to lose 1st myself, by cutting out alcohol and eating healthy food. Then I became ill with what everyone thought was gallstones. I was told to eat a NO FAT diet, which I did. After 3 weeks I had not lost 1lb. My GP said my portion sizes were too big!
THen one day 6 weeks ago, my friend told me she was doing the Cambridge Weight Plan. It's very strict, but takes away the need to eat food, and so limits the temptation to eat. It's soups and shakes which are nutritionally balanced, so all your vitamins etc are taken care of.
I started on the 4th June, and was sceptical as I have never been good at diets, always failed miserably. I decided I would at least give it a week, hopefully 2, and if I couldn't cope I would stop.
I have loved it, and after finishing the 1st week, I felt brilliant, and I have now just finished my 6th week. I have lost 24lb in total, and I can really see the difference now.
I know I will always struggle with food, and that is something I am working on, but I wanted to share my story with you.
If there is anyone who has considered a gastric band or any other form of surgery, then maybe you could consider this type of diet before going down the surgery route.

Bekkie I've actually done LL for 8.5 months and lost 4.5 stone on it a couple of years ago. But then I went back onto my meds and it all came back. My meds are the problem, not the food I eat.

My doctor actually recommended surgery for me as she knows all I have done to lose weight since it's been a problem, saw the vicious circle I am in, and how the meds I am on counteract everything.

I have been having tests since April ivo of surgery, these are ongoing... saw the lung heart specialist last Friday, have another test on Tuesday, and will get these results on 3 August. I am hoping they'll give me a surgery date SOON

Great article :)

For me surgery is the only way left for me, as overeating is not my problem... I can literally eat nothing and still gain weight with my meds.:(

Well done on your and DH's great weight loss
