I thought EYFS incorporated Every Child Matters, so presumed we just followed EYFS. Ofsted didn't ask me anything about ECM.

After the death of Victoria Climbe, the Government commissioned a report into what went wrong.

The outcome of that report were the 5 ECM outcomes.

everyone who works with children must work to those outcomes, whatever your job.

Now when Eyfs came along, it did (as linda says) encompass ECM, but ECM is still a document in its own right.

Ofsted will ask you about the Eyfs, because that's their job to make sure you meet the statutory requirements...

Knowledge of ECM is useful so that you understand what Eyfs is all about and why the safeguarding bits are so important.

Like mama2three I have all my policies and procedures and my portfolio set out to follow ECM.. but that's my choice as I find the Eyfs statutory requirements quite unwieldy and the 5 outcomes much easier to work with.

hth :D

so again we dont have to do any paperwork on ecm

But do on eyfs and just policies in order under the headings of the 5 outcomes ??

You don't have to do your policies under the ECM 5 outcomes if you don't want to - but it does show you have knowledge of the subject

It is also importent to remember that EYFS focuses on children under 5 years old whereas Every Child Matters covers children of all ages - this is therefore to be borne in mind in terms of your overall organisation and planning
