Well think my childminding career is over before its even began.

I have a family history of a genetic eye condition. I have been diaganosed with the disease although I can still see wearing glasses. I do have reduced vision and because of the condition they have advised me not to drive.

I have had my pre reg visit and the ofsted inspector saw me interacting with my son and said I dont have any issues caring for him infact unless I tell people they do not even know I have it apart from wearing glasses.

I registered to be a childminder was honest on the health form and the ofsted people have written to my specialist and asked for further medical advise. They have held of filling this form for 4 weeks and now have dropped the bombshell that they want to send me for a diagnosis test before they will fill this form out the waiting list is two years.

Im so upset this disease is rare so they have no idea if I will ever get any worse only that I can never regain my sight lost. I feel like Im being discriminated against. I am happy to undergo eye tests every year and for them to inspect me more often but I feel they are being unfair not registering me. Lots of people wear glasses and probably ca see less than me and look after children. A guy in my family is registered blind and is a music teacher.

Anyone else had problems registering due to health issues? I am speaking to someone on monday to try and sort this and if not then Im going to look into doing something else

My daughter has a genetic eye condition, she will be 16 next month. She wants to work in childcare, so far she has not been told she cant.

Hope your tests go well.

I totally sympathise with you.xx

I hope she doesnt hit all the problems I have.

I will get the tests but if they refuse to register me then I will fight them every step of the way.

They cant just make your life over because you have a condition that no-1 has control over.

I have recently registered and know how frustrating the process and the waiting can be . I cannot offer any advise on the health issue side but want to wish you luck , fight your corner they cannot discriminate like that . Good luck and keep us posted .

Im really glad she is managing to go to college. I dont have a label for mine yet as I only found out I had mine 1 year ago after I was told as a child I was all clear. It runs in my family my dad has a guide dog and is registered blind. Its a form of autosominal cone rod dystrophy but also efects your central vision.

I hope everything goes well for your daughter and she gets a job at the end of her course x

Unfortunately Ofsted can be very specific about medical stuff.

I know a few childminders on here who have worried when they have been sent for further medical information / tests because of taking medication or having specific conditions etc.

I think it's so that they are not accused in the future of making a decision without having all the information.

Of course nobody in Ofsted are going to know what your condition is, so they need the specialist to get involved.

It's awful that it will take that long to be seen though. I really feel for you.

Nothing to add to what's already been said but didn't want to read and run.

Hope you can get Ofsted to change their mind about registering you

I can understand ofsted wanting more information because as you say they wont know my condition and I never expected them to. But the problem is even the specialist doesnt have any information no-1 does hats why they wont fill out the form. Im in a no win situation. I can see it from ofsteds point of view but I think that they should not be able to hold me back due to a medical condition when their so strict on inclusion etc. Even if they want to send me to been assessed by their own doctor etc.
