View Full Version : Diwali ideas for 2 year olds?

I'm planning to make rangoli patterns by gluing coloured rice to templates next week but I'm not sure how to involve my 2yo mindee in this activity. Anybody got any bright ideas - or should I just let him go for it with the glue and rice as well?

Or maybe just put some of the rice into little pots for him to pour out and fill again?

I find it very easy to plan things for school-age children to do but not the tiny ones

My little ones made salt dough this week and we have made the diwalli candle holder which now cooked will be decorated next week. They will do with paint and glitter and gems.

Ooh thanks guys, that sounds like a nice activity too - will add that to the list.

I'll see how 2yo goes with rice, but also have rangoli designs drawn with chalk on black paper on the cards which I'm fairly sure he'll have a stab at.

Maybe we could also make some chapatis as he could at least have a go at rolling the dough out but might run out of time to actually get them cooked with the very short amount of time I have to do any activities with them.

Check out the pretty rice - really pleased with how it came out!!

I used paste colours, like these (http://www.sugarshack.co.uk/product/31882/12_Icing_Colors_Set).

 at the price (although actually they're really good value as you only need to use a tiny blob), but I didn't buy them specially. I used to be quite into making novelty cakes for the kids but don't have much time anymore so my poor icing colours have been sat in the cupboard for a year or so now. Probably not much good for colouring fondant with now that they're getting old but fab for playdough etc :D

The ratios are 100g rice to 1/2 tsp white vinegar and then add a few drops of colouring until you get the colour you want. Then you just spread it out on a foil lined baking tray and leave it to dry off.

Thank you - would never have thought of using those. It's usually just the boring red, yellow, green and blue food colourings I use.

Will have to see if I can find some a bit cheaper than that though :)

we're doing rangoli patterns for divali too . had just intended to let the 'littlie' be creative with drizzling the glue and pouring out rice , and see what happens! The 2 3 year olds probably wouldnt follow a template either tbh , so just lots of creative mess! but fun!

How thick am I , I boiled all my rice , then coloured it . and dried it in the airing cupboard. Then wondered why I hadnt just used the 'raw' rice in the first place!!

another idea was the hand painting ( is it called mendhi?), the older ones can draw designs on their hands , but its just an excuse for handprint painting for the little one. more mess!

Food clouring works and you only need a tiny drop and you will prib ahve some for playdough if you make it
