Enjoy! :D

Rainy days and the 6 areas of learning and development

PSED
• Talk about thunder and lightening in an excited way and read stories about giants eg Jack and the Beanstalk;
• Discuss what makes you frightened and reassure children they will not be hurt;
• Talk about likes and dislikes and make a collage of the children’s favourite things to keep them busy if you cannot get outside;

CLL
• Introduce rainy day words and see how many ways they know to describe the weather outside;
• Read ‘Kipper’s rainy day’ and other rainy day books from the library or your collection;

PSR&N
• Collect rainwater for measuring;
• Count how far away thunder is and practice counting the seconds using a watch;
• Focus on the ‘up’ and ‘down’ aspects of Incy Wincy Spider and explore more opposites;

KUW
• Talk about clothes for rainy days;
• Use collected rainwater to water the plants in your garden and talk about recycling;
• Explore animals that like the rain or animals who live in the water eg fish;

PD
• Go for a walk and splash in some puddles;
• Make spiders using pipe cleaners for the legs and a piece of card for the body – it doesn’t have to be a complicated work of art to satisfy children;

CD
• Sing – Dr Foster went to Gloucester and Incy Wincy Spider;
• Draw raindrops on big pieces of paper to make a display background. Cut out pictures of wellies, umbrellas and raincoats from clothing magazines for the display;
• Design an umbrella ... give children a simple outline each and let them use a range of collage materials.

Asda have umbrellas in the toy section that come with pens so you can colour them in.
