I need ideas for a butterfly activity

during the summer holidays i'm doing 6 weeks of butterfly activities as i'll have my new full timers and they are 7 and (will be) 2 years old, along with K who will be almost 2, and M 10 plus my own kids aged 9 and 12

going to make caterpillars using egg boxes, and want to make the life cycle of the butterfly using the kids photos (provided by parents) IE caterpillars using different coloured circles and a baby pic of each child for the face, and then a butterfly again using bright colours and a recent pic for the face :D

i'm also wanting to hatch butterflys but can't find anywhere to buy the hatching kits???

any other ideas???

Hi
I bought some caterpillars from Insectlore on the internet. They were about £15 for 5 and they have just turned into crysalis, very interesting so far. Have just had a catalogue from yellow moon and they have a butterfly kit for I think £17 and that says includes net for butterflies to develop in and a voucher to get 5 caterpillars so that is probably the cheaper option.

I have found quite a few ideas for craft stuff re butterflies on here. Just put caterpillar or butterfly in search. One that sounds good was using coffee filters and drawing on them with felt tip pens, spraying with water so colours run and then putting pipe cleaner round middle to make butterfly body, pics of finished product look really good.

Hope this helps, have fun.

http://www.insectlore-europe.com/

we had magnifying glasses
the older children had a blank notepad each to draw monitor and predict sizing, how long, what they might look like etc

we made tissue paper butterflies for the window so they looked great when the sun shone through them.

we made giant butterfly wings out of cardboard boxes and attatched elastic to them so the children could wear them

the child took pics of them that then got printed out some into their scrapbooks others went home

good old butterfly painting too

I made butterflies from concertina folded paper wings and pipecleaner bodies as seen in Creative Steps magazine. Could be made into a mobile? Will try and find a photo

This site is really good, this week Shelley is doing a butterfly theme.
If you register with her she will send you a different activity each day.
