Help every time I plan a topic to do I seem to go off on right angles doing other things. This months plan was to do numbers, colours and tranport and somehow we ended up doing French and Spanish I know it started off with us counting in French but went totally off track. Any advice for how to stay on topic especially when I have older children who want to join in and am trying to involve all of them.

Thats great that you are planning but we don't need to do specific themes or topics. What we do is follow the childs interests and it sounds like that is what you are doing. We are supposed to be flexible enough to be able to go of in a different direction if that is where the children are taking us.

If the older kids want to focus in more on specific things - great follow their interests and perhaps do the more focused stuff when the younger ones are asleep, busy etc.

What you are doing is exactly what Ofsted are looking for. loose plans that can be diverted through the childrens interests

Don't make your plans complicated and leave space for child led activities.

That way you won't feel cheated when you go off tangent :D

Thats great that you are planning but we don't need to do specific themes or topics. What we do is follow the childs interests and it sounds like that is what you are doing.
That's EXACTLY what I do Pip. I've never done themes or topics due to the fact that my mindees have been too young to understand. Instead I've always focused on their interests and done my planning around it. We all have different ways of working and one size doesn't fit all :p
