Cough Medicine

Just a little reminder to you (if youre like me) and have mentioned cough medicine in your administering medication policy we are now no longer allowed to give it even with parents permission or request.

My development officer came round this week and told me to amend mine, adding like aspirin we cant give it to children. Apparrently this came into action two weeks ago.

Is this due to the new list of meds that shouldn't be given to under 6's?

Seems so. But she was adamant that we must say we cant give it.:)

I don't give cough medicines anyway as don't believe they do anything, but will amend my policy with a little note at the bottom saying im unable to.

I am so annoyed, I have not been told this before! And why haven't I been told by my DO who came round a few weeks back??!! GRRRR! I administered cough meds to my little 20 month old mindee (obviously got parent to sign my med book, etc). I do wish they would let us all know what is going on/what the new requirements are.

If it wasn't for you telling me this I would not know a thing about it, so thank you xx

l don't give cough medicine unless parents bring it and then get them to sign, thanks for information will amend my p/work

Thank you for the info. I have never given cough medicine anyway and if I was asked I would only accept prescribed anyway. In 15years I never been asked.

I must say I am always very reluctant to give anything and I have never kept Calpol or anything else in my cupboard for mindees 'just in case'.

why cant we give cough medicine?

A few weeks ago it was in the news that cough medicine for children does nothing medically to lessen the cough and can actually be harmful to children. I assume it comes from that report.
