Hi

I am changing my RA's to include level of risk (high, medium or low) but does this mean the chances of an accident happening because of the risk, or the severity of the accident if it does happen? I hope that makes sense!

Thanks, Anni

i've always understood it to be what the risk would be like in my home - all of mine are low because i have already taken measures to make them that way (i have put in what the general risks are and what i have done to minimise them).
hope that makes sense.:)

I always thought it meant the level of the risk if it happened

I have done it this was -

Say what the hazard is
Point out what the risks are - and include intial risk level
List action/s taken to reduce or remove risk
Then put risk level once these actions are in place

You should assess how badly someone could get hurt e.g. no first aid needed=1 death=10 then asses how likely it would happen e.g. really doubful=1 almost definatly=5 and mulitipy the outcomes.

e.g.

child falling thorugh upstairs window-
seriousness of injury very high, lets say=8
likelyness of it actually happening very low=1
8 x 1 = 8

1-10 = low risk
11-20 = medium
21-30= high

Something like that, I forget the exact numbers. ;)

Although they will be more bothered that you have made the effort of doing a risk assesment than your personal way of doing the scoring.

I found this, might be helpful. HSE rock, usually.

Have a look at this risk matrix for an idea.

This is in no way official, but I just listed

H as something that could cause death (ie electricity),
M as possibly needing hospital treatment (ie broken bone)
L as no harm.

Since doing my RAs I have discovered that my house must be the most dangerous place around. Its amazing we survive it each day

Thanks everyone, brilliant references and ideas, no excuse now not to do it!
