Which word do you use - sofa, settee or couch?

I remember a mindee's dad laughing at the word I used a few years ago (in a nice way) and I can't remember the reason he gave as to why he uses a different word.

Today I was chatting to my mindee and he was looking for something. I said it was on the ______ and he didn't know what I meant. I wondered if he used a different word.

I think I actually use all three randomly. What do you use and why?

I mainly use 'sofa' and occasionally use 'Settee' but never 'couch' and no idea why I use the words I do I guess it's what my family used as I was growing up!

I do think people use different words depending on where you live as my DS girlfriend comes from the north where we live in the East and when she came to live with us for a while it was funny getting used to some of the words she used.

We use sofa or occasionally settee.

I used to use settee, never couch but now only use sofa. Sofa always used to be considered the 'posh' version when I was younger. Sofa seems to be the only word I hear used now. My mum had a Settee that opened up into a double bed and we called that a studio couch!
