Good morning VE Day Friday

Have you got anything special planned for today for VE Day? Had I been working this week I’d have spent time with the children making flags, baking cakes, having picnics and listening to music from the era. I’m sure there would have been something going on at the library or the museum that we’d have gone to and the toddler group would have had a party.
As it is, we’re not really doing anything. My own children are all too old to want to wave flags and have afternoon tea and we don’t live in a neighbourhood where families will be in their front gardens having a socially distanced street party. I’ve realised this is probably why I love childminding - it gives me the opportunity to get involved in events I wouldn’t normally be part of :thumbsup::D

So today will be pretty much like any other for me. I’ll aim to get a few more jobs ticked off my to-do list this morning then I might sit in the garden this afternoon with a cup of tea and a slice of cake and think about my grandad, the only person I knew who’d fought in the war. Unfortunately he never talked about it, so I don’t have any of his stories to think about, but I will remember the happy times I spent with him when I was young.

Good morning and Happy VE day.

We're not particularly doing anything. Although I worked tuesday, it isn't the sort of thing that floats the older mindees boat and baby is just a baby!

We'll probably have an cup of tea and some cake, DH is playing last post on his cornet at some point ... simultaneous playing by all band members around the area. I'm doing a VE day singalong with the Great British Home Chorus with Gareth Malone at 5.30 on YouTube which will be fun.
I would have put my bunting up ... but I can't find it!

Morning.

DD and I went for an evening walk last night after clap for carers. We were actually blown away by the amount of bunting and flags already lining the streets and houses.

I was planning a party just for our house because WW2 is DD's current history topic, but then one of the neighbours suggested that we all go to the end of our drives and have a picnic at 3pm, so that's what we're doing. We've made red, white and blue paper chains, some crepe paper decorations, red, white and blue pompoms and some bunting. DD and I are going to make jam tarts, because my mum said she used to make them in the war when she was little.

I've printed off some spitfires so we'll have a flying competition, I've made a Blockbusters quiz and have printed off a word search and word scramble. We'll also watch all the lovely stuff on tv too.

Like you, Mouse, I'll be thinking about family members who are no longer with us.

Bunting and balloons are up.
We had our own celebration, we don’t have any neighbours but our friend who has the stable and two ponies in our field joined us after working in the stable - over the wall, social distancing.
We listened to Churchill, did the national toast with some sparkly, then tucked in to afternoon tea - we popped a table over the wall and made our stable neighbour her own tiered plate of sandwiches and scones and cake.
We played 1940’s music.
Then it rained! But we carried on with our brollies up.
A lovely afternoon thinking about something else was lovely.

Singing with Rock choir sounds great, I belonged to a group where we used to live but there isn’t one nearby here - I have tuned into some of their podcasts/ videos during lockdown and they’ve been good.

We had planned a street party in the village and the toddler group were going to sing and have a little party in the memorial hall garden for the families....as most live isolated in the countryside around the village and I live at the top of the hill out of the village too....but I actually enjoyed it just being ‘us’ plus one.

Lots of my neighbours had afternoon tea and drinks in the drives. Our road goes round a green so it’s quite a nice setting. The children played football and the adults chatted to each other. Personally as I was here on my own, I watched VE Day things on tv and sang along to the songs. Made me remember when I was younger when my mum and dad used to sing along to all the songs. Brought a tear to my eye, that my dad was a young man in the war and mum worked in a factory.

Our corner of our little cul-de-sac had a lovely time, we all came out for the 2 minutes silence then from 4pm once the rain had cleared everyone came out for their afternoon tea. One neighbour was blasting out music from the era, everyone stayed out until 9pm when some had the Queen's address to the nation playing then after a quick sing a long to "we'll meet again" we all went in. It was lovely everyone socialising from a distance.
