very odd question, but google can't help me, although maybe I'm not asking quite the right question in the right way!

I'm making a sunhat type hat for DD ( as part of a costume ) and its easy to do, I've made lots over the years. I was just measuring and drawing the pattern ( usually just do it by eye and luck, but I don't have time to fiddle with it, plus it needs to be 'right'! ) ... anyway, I digress!

I was talking about the names of the parts of the hat ... so the BRIM, is the bit that sticks out round the edge to keep the sun off. The CROWN is the bit that stands up from the brim, and goes round the head ( like a crown ) ... but what do you call the bit at the top, that fill in the top of the crown like a lid?

hoping someone can help, no real need to know, but I NEED to know!

THANK YOU!

I think the whole of the top is the crown, or you can break it down into the band (the side bit) and the crown tip (the lid).

I think it's just called 'top' as in open top, extended top, feather topped?

Going off on a tangent...

There is a fab little museum in Ashton/Greater Manchester called Portland Basin. When I went a couple of years ago they had a section on 'hats'. It was really hands on and was so fascinating! I never knew hats were so interesting until then, lol. On my to do list is visit the hat museum in Stockport, as I get off the train there sometimes when I am going to visit family. DH looks at me in disbelief every time I tell him this, lol.

My great uncle was a milliner, so maybe that's where I get my interest from. His company made hats for some rather famous football players many moons ago. Not sure it was him personally, I think there was a little family embellishment going on, but I'm happy to go with it!
