View Full Version : Do you visit a scrap bank?
I occasionally get emails from our development officer reminding us about the scrap bank in our LA. I would pop in if it wasn't at the other side of our borough and quite tricky to get to. I went to one years and years ago and didn't get much but I suppose some weeks you can go and there will be tons of stuff, a bit like the luck of the draw.
Do any of you go and have you got anything useful?

i used to use a nearby one which was wonderful but unfortunately has closed due to lack of funding. I have collected many bits we still use , carboard tubes , wallpaper book , ribbons , material , carpet tiles , bottle caps , bobbins ,
The one i have joined now is poor in comparison, good for card and paper though.

Ours is quite good but the opening hours are limited and parking is a nightmare.
I have had membership of it in previous years but I don't manage to get there very often so it's not really worth it. If it was open at times I could go I would definitely use it more.

My closest is about 1 1/2 hrs drive away in another LA! I would use one if it was closer!
However, we keep and collect alot of recyclable bits and get given them by people we know! I share with school and they also donate stuff to me!
If there is something I really want I get DH to post on local Facebook wanted page!

We have one it's just a jaunt to get there and dh isn't always agreeable to me filling the house up with junk (his words) I wish there was a way of checking what they had got before you went

If you ever want any Cadbury's Pots of Joy pots just let me know - I've got hundreds of them :laughing: I can now bring myself to throw away the empty fromage frais pots (usually because the children have squashed them), but the Pots of Joy ones are just too good to put in the bin.
I tend to keep everything and have to put up with the constant teasing from my family. DH took a tiny little bit of string off something yesterday and said "I suppose you want this keeping?" I had the last laugh though when I put it in the wool bundle for the birds. I told him a little sparrow will be grateful for it when it takes it to build its nest!
Our scrap store always has a lot of fabric and I do like to pick that up when I'm there. They also have things like out of date diaries which the children love to write in.

Have they got a FB page? Our local one has and they often put pictures on of what they've got in store, especially when they get something new in.

Same here !!!
I have a huge box in garage that DH is threatening to put in skip at work ... "but i NEED it " is my usual response!
We got a Wagamamas take away the other night and their curry sauce comes in quite a sturdy crescent 'moon' shaped plastic container. They must come in handy for something...

Ha ha! They sound fab!
Don't you love it when you know you need something, but you can't quite put your finger on it, then you have a eureka moment and remember you've got a pot or box somewhere that's just perfect :laughing::jump for joy:
The trick is trying to find it after it's been put away somewhere safe, but that feeling of satisfaction when you know you were right to keep it :D

I have a huge stash of these too!!! My kids love them
They're such good pots!
I even made my kids eat chocolate orange ones so I could have orange pots as well as purple ones :laughing:

I do try and do the next best thing ... when my box is full I take the overspill to school for them to use!

LOL .... don't forget about orange lidded milk!
If we're out and buying a bottle of juice or something to drink ... i choose depending on the shape/ size of the bottle! We don't go to pretamanger very often but I do like their juice bottles!

I used to find the scrap bank great when I was in school, but you got a large amount of off cuts, ribbons etc..too many to store and use as a childminder - unless a group of you shared.
There is nothing like a full house for Christmas to make you rethink what you actually need to store! I looked at the den and music room last week and wondered how I was going convert them to a bedroom space too....so gave myself half an hour to just recycle ..no thinking...big bag...in.
Bubble wrap and the brown paper from Amazon parcels is my weakness. I emptied two drawers and the piano now has a nicer sound without the bubble wrap that was stored behind it!
This morning I wrapped a Christmas parcel that is being sent.......I forgot that this is also a reason for storing it...I may have to go and buy brown paper!!!

This thread is turning into confessions!
I have to confess I have an obsession with certain puddings that come from Aldi - one comes in a little glass pot with lid and the other a glass 'shot' glass (tea light, little candle sized) .
The first I fill with all kinds of little craft bits and the second we make into candle votives with the children.
I also love the pudding and shouldn't eat as many as I do BUT the pots they come in are so useful :blush::p
I have been to our local scrap store and got some stuff but struggling for storage at the moment and their opening times aren't that convenient to me.

These are great ideas for these little glasses. I've a few and they are too cute to take to the recycling area. I might have to look at mine again and think candles.
Our school does a jaromara stall at their summer fete. Small jars are brilliant as they don't need much to fill them !!

We have used Giotto Décor Pens to decorate and this week we are glueing tissue paper and cellophane to them :)
