Can any one give me any information regarding the DBS update service- are we supposed to be registered withe the service?
would be most grateful for any info.

If you were registered in 2010 then no. Currently it is only for new registered CMers and it is required for their application.
CMers registered in the past may have old CRBs, old DBS or no police check at all, as they were only introduced fairly recently.
No one needs to get new DBSs if they are already a registered CMer (unless asked for some particular reason by Ofsted/LA etc?)
