Need gloves to change nappies?

I'm just trying to write some policies to be come a childminder.

Do I have to use gloves to change nappies or is it just suggested practice?

Ofsted will expect u to use gloves. A childminder I know managed to get out of using them though. Inspector asked her if she used gloves for changing nappies n she basically told them no because what do they actually do, who do they protect when u wash hands before and after nappy changes, waste of time. Its up to u what u do but u have to be able to say why uv chosen that n see what they reply with lol

Ofsted do not expect to see gloves at all. They expect to see robust hygiene practices however you choose to implement and demonstrate them is up to you.

I dont use gloves and ofsted saw this and didnt comment. I use hand gel before and after each change and also clean the mat in the same way.

I have also been watched by my level 3 assessor and my do and they were both happy with my regime to prevent any hygiene issues.

I have changed nappies during inspection and never been asked. It depends on your inspector and whilst I do have gloves I don't wear them, just use common sense hygiene

I never used gloves during my inspection and inspector didn't bat an eyelid. I washed my hands after, with anti bac spray, washed the mindees hands, bagged the happy and put it in the nappy bin and cleaned the areas with spray. As long as you can show you're practicing safe hygiene then gloves aren't necessary

I do wear gloves, through choice. In England there is no requirement to use them, but I think you may have to in Wales.

I use gloves as no amount of hand washing will get rid of that smell! And I have a lo in cloth nappies that need to be scrapped and rinsed. So they are necessary to me :thumbsup:

It is, isn't it? We have no requirements to use gloves here, though I actually prefer to. I have tried aprons as well, but found them more of a hindrance than a help.

I use gloves for all sorts of things - cleaning outdoor toys that have got snails stuck to them, cleaning muddy boots, picking up the dead birds & mice the cat leaves in the garden! I wouldn't be without mine now.

I have never used gloves, never thought about it to be honest, just wash hands and mat thoroughly after each nappy change and put some anti-bac spray on my hands before changing. I have been minding 20 years and must have changed nappies in an inspection although I don't recall it ever being mentioned.

Think you need to do what feels comfortable for you.

I started using gloves recently to change soiled nappies. Mainly cos i have an lo who always does very loose messy poo's....yucky!! Just makes my hands feel cleaner after changing, even tho i still wash them!

I don't use gloves unless it is clear that little one has an upset tummy and I am waiting for parents to collect - I think there is enough waste that will take hundreds of years to decompose without adding 6 pairs of disposable gloves each day to the bin, for the same reason I prefer to wash individual towels rather than use paper towels.

I use gloves for soiled nappies. One of mine always seems to fill his nappy when I am halfway through cooking/preparing a meal and I would always be paranoid that I had missed a tiny spot if I didn't wear them. My inspector did seem to be checking that I wore them and she wrote it in my report that I did. (I am in England.) I keep them for cleaning up vomit and wiping dog mess off shoes. :panic:

Same here. Some of the soiled nappies are just awful and I couldn't face cleaning up without them :panic:. They do also come in handy for lots of other things too.
