Working out percentages for large garden equipment / big changes to provision

Disclaimer – I am not a tax expert. I rang the helpline and explained my situation. The advisor told me what to do. If your situation is different you will need to ask advice yourself. Thank you. Sarah.

Expenses must be reasonable and you must be able to explain to HMRC how you have worked them out if you are challenged.

Here is an example –
I have made changes to my garden – I have added some AstroTurf and bought a new shed. HMRC say that some of the changes are for my benefit / my family’s benefit and some are for childminding.

I tell HMRC that Ofsted require me to make the outside area available to children every working day and that I would not have made the changes if I was not a childminder.

So, HMRC advise me to claim a % of childminded children’s use of the garden in the following way –
I work 48 weeks a year for 5 days a week = 240 days
There are 365 days in a year
I use the website Percentage Calculator (http://mistupid.com/math/percents.htm) to ask the question –
240 is what percent of 365? The website generates the answer = 66%

So I can claim 66% of the cost of the changes I have made as expenses.

If you have any questions about your personal circumstances you should ring the HMRC self-assessment advice line and ask them – you will need your National Insurance number as well as your name, address and date of birth – make sure you say you are a childminder because they will not automatically understand our unique agreement between HMRC and NCMA.

That is interesting!

Sarah, can I ask, would you put that expense under AIA (Annual Investment Allowance) or as something else?

Is it any different if, like me, the minder doesnt have her own children? I had to put up new fence as existing one wasnt suitable for minding.

This is interesting to know and I was about to ask something similar! My garden is covered in loose chippings at the moment and I am planning to turf it as I don't think a area covered in small stones is particularly safe - would I be able to claim a percentage of this as I wouldn't be doing it otherwise? Also I have to put a gate up to prevent access to my carport/garage would this also be suitable for claiming against? Thank You :)

Thank you Sarah for bringing this to our attention, as ever you are a great sign poster to important information...x

My friend, who is a tax accountant and gives me free information over a Chinese take away, advised that I could claim 100% for a lovely gate leading to the compost area as I would not need it if I wasn't a CM ( no children at home) or the 'bin storage fence' ...if asked, found a H&S quote to quote.

Also said I would be very unlucky if anyone questioned it as there are apparently loads of suspicious tax evasion schemes out there which would take priority...hence why people pay him!...but it would just be my luck....

I think it says a lot about the character and morals of our sector that we are second guessing this, while the big banker city folk are splashing (OUR) cash without a second thought!!!

`I need to put up a new fence Ziggy cause mine has rotted away at the bottom and is very wobbly. If I wasn't childminding it wouldn't be a priority as no young children of my own, but because of childminding, I am getting done very soon and putting it through my books.

If you are ever unsure about your personal circumstances I suggest you ring and ask them!

Make sure you say (a few times) 'I am a childminder' and 'I have to do this for Ofsted' :D

My brother is an accountant...I have no children of my own so I would say 90% of work we do downstairs and outside is solely because I am a childminder. After double checking with my brother, I put all of it as expense, because it is.

I've called HMRC before and the person on the other end hasn't known how to answer, one even said "ask an accountant"?!?!

Another constant worry. Xxx

That is the worst part isn't it - asking for advice and the answer is never confident or consistent!
