I have spoken to 3 childminders this morning who didn't realise that this Friday is the last day you can lodge your 12/13 tax return without penalty. After this date a £100 bill will be levied, whether your return is nil or not.

Also, any tax due has to be paid by Friday or you could incurr interest charges too.

Hi just wondered how many people of forum may not read this message, I thought it was going to be about you giving up (thought that was a bit sudden!) - is it possible to change the title to "Tax return deadline or face a fine"?

What annoys me is that they won't let you pay by credit card. It has to be a debit card. Of course tried it yesterday and it would not go through as I bank with Lloyds! Grrr!

I pay mine through Bill Pay on the HMRC website and it will be done on Friday - hope Lloyds works by then lol

I have just returned from a weekend in the South East.
All over Brighton and Eastbourne were notices about different people being 'relaxed' because they have done their taxes and Friday 31st January as deadline, in the service station there was the same, it has been talked about on the radio, it is a pop up on bbc news website, there is a sign in our local bus shelter I am told, others on here say there have been adverts on the TV....this is a lot of money invested in one date that I was told existed when I originally got in touch with the tax folk!!
In my opinion if you are self employed you should work to the dates set, and this is one date that you should know as everybody has to pay taxes or we wouldn't be able to run the country. there must be loads that don't pay any attention though to warrant all the money spent on advertising the date!

You are right Flora Dora...even if people do not listen to the radio or watch TV how can they avoid the huge billboards out there?
It seems the govt has to spend money reminding people when to comply with HMRC rules...the 31 Jan date has been the same for years
In addition HMRC would have already reminded the self employed to file their assessment...even the fine does not prevent some from forgetting such an important date

Why do the HMRC feel that we need nannying? If there is a fine in place use it. It is down to the individual. Personally I dont need signs and reminders and think the money spent should be put to better use elsewhere. I find it annoying that they want to hold our hands. I also feel that if anyone forgets thats their tough. Most people now have a means of setting reminders for themselves whether its on smart phones or in good old paper diaries.

My opinion might not be that of the masses but there we go.

I expect it costs more to process fines and not get taxes paid than on the advertising, but I agree, more money in the govt bank from fines and expectation that citizens pay their tax on time would make everyone take responsibility.......or would it?

If you pay by billpay you can use a credit card but it costs you a payment fee. They also accept debit cards:D. I have just paid mine and noticed the MasterCard logo on the screen.

I worry that if I leave it till Friday the system will crash

That said, I submitted my return two weeks ago and have yet to have any letter or email telling me what to pay. Its the first time I have done it myself, and not gone through and accountant, so I wanted to have written confirmation for obvious reasons. I logged in last night and and the first page said I had much more to pay than I thought. It was only going to the statement details that you could see, part of the amount was the payment on account that is due in July (second instalment) . So I deducted this and paid the balance, assuming this is the correct amount as that was enough thanks :-)

You get a confirmation of submisson by email when you do it online. Yes you have done it right and you should get a letter close to July with the amount due. If you had done the tax return earlier you would of got one for January.

Paid mine this morning. If anyone else still hasn't done it you can pay through Billpay and it will be classed as payment today. You can get into this one you are logged into your account on the hmrc website.

Better do some work now as I am poor :crying:
