hectors house

Just had to renew my combined house / contents insurance - I was with Aviva but thought I would try Admiral for a quote as I have a multi car policy with them - the questions they asked were quite ridiculous, they wanted to know how much my stock value was, whether visitors were escorted on and off the premises, if I had any employees, which rooms children had access too (although I said I have a clause on my current policy that says I can't claim for accidental damage done by mindees) - they also said I could only have 5 children in the house at any time - I explained that I was registered by Ofsted who obviously had their own rules regarding supervised access to my home and ratios and that Morton Michel, my liability insurers said I was insured for more children providing I didn't break the Ofsted ratios. I also have employee liability under my MM insurance.
I gave up trying to get a quote and went back to Aviva to try to get the price lowered - the person there asked me extra questions and asked how often the house was left empty during the day - I explained that other than popping out for toddlers or to walk dogs that there was someone home most of the day (Monday to Friday) - for some reason this made the policy go UP! You would have thought that it would have gone down as less likely to be burgled and more likely to spot a leaking or burst pipe quicker. They also reminded me that with them I can only have 6 children on the premises at any time. (This figure would include my own - if they were young enough to be classed as children)
So my advice is to phone up and check whether your current house or contents insurers have imposed a similar restriction on child numbers that you may not know about - I don't know what it has to do with them as I don't have accidental damage on either policy. Insurance companies make me so angry - they are quite happy to take your money but aren't so willing when it comes to giving any of it back - I have never made a claim in 30 years.
