Today my mindee of 34 months old knew the phonic sounds for most of the alphabet, as long as it was teamed with a picture. Ie N for net, F for fish, S for snake.

She does not know them without the pictures just yet.

Trying to think of a next step related to phonics to help her progress further. Any ideas?

I was thinking of colouring sheets with phonics like the kids have when they start reception but mindee is not massively into colouring so maybe we could do some tissue paper glueing on them.

Making letters in shaving foam and repeating the phonic sound.

Umm what else..brain dead this morning!

We play with letters alot ... I have wooden letters that we match to letter/object picture cards. Alphabet lotto. Alphabet threading beads. Alphabet puzzles. Playing i spy.
My LO loves writing too so we do lots of patterns and lines and write name and other letters...using paint sand white boards etc. We spot letters on our walks.
I saw a phonics sensory type bottle on imagination tree ( I'm on my phone and don't know how to link! )
Have fun x

At this stage ( which is called Phase 1 in the letters and sounds recommended Govt system) you can concentrate on listening to sounds, in the environment and all around them, through singing and rhyming too ...a lot of ground work needs to be done in general sound work before children are able to hear specific sounds in words...though general introduction to the fact that letters exist through games like you have done is also a good foundation for later phonic work.

I've put the archived link to the letters and sounds resources above ( most schools base their phonic work on this now)

But this site has a good overview of how you teach phonics and some resources ....

Went on a training session for letters and sounds recently, the website is really useful and has lots of ideas for activities and games including making a phonic lotto game or odd one out game (get 4 pictures or could be toys/props from toy box and get child to spot the one that doesn't start with the same letter).

What about having a letter of the week/day and getting the LO to find things that start with that letter
Playing i-spy (this has been really successful with my youngest DD)
Using foam letters stuck on milk bottle tops to match to pictures
Could you borrow any books from the library with the alphabet in I have one which has flaps etc that is Maisy and the letter links to the picture but has to be revealed.

I would not concentrate on letters for a bit and focus on the other equally important aspects ...without these then the foundations of phonics will be wobbly:

From the letters and sounds website:

Aspect 1 - General sound discrimination - environmental

The aim of this aspect is to raise children's awareness of the sounds around them and to develop their listening skills. Activities suggested in the guidance include going on a listening walk, drumming on different items outside and comparing the sounds, playing a sounds lotto game and making shakers.

Aspect 2 - General sound discrimination - instrumental sounds

This aspect aims to develop children's awareness of sounds made by various instruments and noise makers. Activities include comparing and matching sound makers, playing instruments alongside a story and making loud and quiet sounds.

Aspect 3 - General sound discrimination - body percussion

The aim of this aspect is to develop children's awareness of sounds and rhythms. Activities include singing songs and action rhymes, listening to music and developing a sounds vocabulary.

Aspect 4 - Rhythm and rhyme

This aspect aims to develop children's appreciation and experiences of rhythm and rhyme in speech. Activities include rhyming stories, rhyming bingo, clapping out the syllables in words and odd one out.

Aspect 5 - Alliteration

The focus is on initial sounds of words, with activities including I-Spy type games and matching objects which begin with the same sound.

Aspect 6 - Voice sounds

The aim is to distinguish between different vocal sounds and to begin oral blending and segmenting. Activities include Metal Mike, where children feed pictures of objects into a toy robot's mouth and the teacher sounds out the name of the object in a robot voice - /c/-/u/-/p/ cup, with the children join in

The activities introduced in Phase 1 are intended to continue throughout the following phases, as lots of practice is needed before children will become confident in their phonic knowledge and skills.
