I've checked this out and it is a genuine threat, affecting PC but not Mac. Just want to warn everyone to be on your guard.

It has happened to a friend of ours and he has just lost all his photos and many other important things. :(

He had recently done some purchases online, as we all do this time of year, this left his guard down so when an email arrived from UPS saying his parcel had been despatched and to click on the attachment for the tracking number he did not take the usual precautions to check it was definitely addressed to him by name.

He then got a message saying that all his important files had been locked and for them to be released it would cost $700. If you pay they are released, which is awful, how do these people get away with it!!

I had a very similar email supposedly from Amazon I had just ordered from them the day before. It said my receipt was attached luckily something made me think it wasn't quite right and checked the sender details and it was a virus !!!

I had a virus like that last year although I don't remember opening an e-mail about a delivery - when I was just searching on the internet it came up with a horrible message saying my computer had been locked as I was under investigation by West Midlands police for looking at illegal child porn websites and if I wanted my computer unlocked I had to pay X amount of money using a payment transfer scheme you can use in shops and garages - the virus was called Ransom ware - I luckily know an ICT lecturer who sorts out and mends my computer and he managed to crack the two x 25 digit code and retrieve all my photos and work.

So the first part of the warning should be - Stop posting on the forum NOW and back up everything that is precious to you on your computer and remember to back up regularly, 2nd part is don't open e-mails that you don't trust but admit at this time of the year everyone does order things on-line and have things delivered, 3rd part is make sure you have virus software (the virus I had managed to disable my software) - sometimes when you get a pop up even if you click on yes / no or the X the pop up is booby trapped - the best way to close down is to press Alt, Control, Delete and then end the programme/pop up running from the tasks running menu.

I seem to be being targeted now. Lots of emails from FedEx saying rewards offer being shipped. Also lots of emails that seem to be from banks ( where I don't have accounts) saying to follow the link and reset security as my account has had suspicious transactions!!
My AVAST software blocks the emails and they go to junk(usually) I delete asap!
Clever so and so's some emails look genuine but often the recipients emails are showing and all similar to mine so obviously trying it on.
Thanks for the info Pauline
