Chinchillas?

Ok...so hubby really, really wants chinchillas...I would never dream of saying no cos I'm one of those that are classed as an animal person!!

So it will be happening in the very near future...however I wondered if anyone else had chinchillas and if so, how they fit into your lives?

I looked into getting one years ago and I know they're pretty easy to care for, enjoy company and can live for 15 years plus so wouldn't be something we take on without thought!

So we would have...

A four foot marine aquarium
2 small tropical aquariums
A golden retriever
A cocker spaniel
2 rabbits
2 Chinese hamsters
Plus two chinchillas....
Plus I would like chickens :doh:

I do too :littleangel:...hubby has now agreed to the chickens, it's me that's dragging my heels on sorting a coop etc...
And that name is fab...love it :)

All our chickens are named after superheroes lol.

Get the coop you won't regret it (hopefully you won't)

The comment we had tonight was "mum can you rescue the chicken from the football goal net. Swear the dog thought it was chicken in the basket for tea :-D

Made me smile seeing your long list of pets, how wonderful.

After recently losing little Freya, my cat, I now only have one cat and 2 dogs. This should be enough for anyone but I used to have many more and the house feels very light on pets.

If it wasn't for financial reasons, I'm on my own, I would have some more, maybe a little herd of rescue guinea pigs might appear anyway though!! :D

Aw we have a houseful too! Dog, three guinea pigs and three rabbits. Dh wants a bearded dragon for his bday and I have found one called izzy who needs rehoming , hoping to pick him up on his bday for a surprise (cos I told him they were expensive And maybe we should wait Til Christmas!)

We had chinchilla's until recently. We are now petless :-(

As for chinchilla's - we got one when we lived in our old place before having children. Our reasoning was that we had to have something that could be just in doors, easily left all day while we worked, something that lasted longer than a hamster and also had quite a bit of space. We got another shortly after as he seemed lonely. We bought a second cage and slowly introduced them - cages next to each other so they could smell each other, then out socialising when we were there, until we joined the cages together (wire cutters and a plastic tube!). Girls are territorial - we had 1 of each. They mated and had 1 girl baby, and then another 2 girl babies. The more frail of the babies only lived a couple of months. We had Daddy chopped so that we could stick at 4. We couldn't bare to separate them from their babies as they were so cute with them! Mum died after 9 years, baby 2 after 11 years, Dad after 13 years flowed shortly after by baby 1. When we were down to 2 we bought another normal sized cage. They have always been of interest to our children as well as children I have looked after. However they are not really pets I would recommend for children due to them preferring to run around rather than being held still. They are very fast and we only got them out in the hall way at our current home and in the bathroom (made safe, loo lid down etc) in our old place. Their bodies are smaller than they look and they can fit into very small gaps and chew things like wires! They are easy to keep in terms of once you have bought them they are cheap, only need small amount of chinchilla pellets really and treats like a grape is enough for a whole day. They are easy to clean out as they have a tray on the cage that slides out of the bottom, so it's a quick tip the mess away, spray, wipe, clean sawdust and slide back in - 2 mins maybe- wipe the shelves down that's it. They are much less smelly than rabbits, hamsters etc. In all the time we had them there was only 2 bites - 1 was me when I put a stop to a fight - probably not the best idea lol! and the other was my son when he was 3 and poked his finger in the cage to get nibbled - lol! They are really lovely and nice and different too.

The only reason we haven't replaced them is that we would really like to move next year and if we do we don't want to be restricted by the size of the pet cage. We want to wait until we have moved and then think again. Feel free to pm me any questions :-)

Sounds just like our house!
As the kids have grown and left home we have had less pets!
Now we have, a bichon, 2 Zebra finches, 2(mad) parrot fish, 2 elderly rabbits, 2 goldfish in a barrel in the garden!! I cant begin to list the pets we have had over the years! Must admit to wanting 2 Indian runner ducks!!! but don't really have the space, sadly!!
