''Ofsted chief inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw has called for a dramatic overhaul of the current approach to early years assessment, describing the current EYFS Profile as “too broad”.
In a speech made last month, Sir Wilshaw called for “a direct link between national assessment in reception and assessment at the end of Key Stage 1 in order to measure progress”, arguing that the EYFS Profile “does not link effectively to subsequent Key Stage assessments” and “provides a weak basis for accountability”.
He praised nurseries and schools that “assess their children much earlier than required by the EYFS Profile” adding that “the current timing of national assessment, at the end of Reception year, is too late.”
However, the Ofsted chief was criticised by early years leaders for proposing changes just a year after the most recent review of the EYFS. Concerns have also been raised that his comments are yet another sign of a move towards the ‘schoolification’ of the early years.
“We have consistently argued that the principles of the EYFS should be extended to the end of Key Stage 1 at age seven as this would give a better foundation for children’s formal learning thereafter,” said Alliance chief executive Neil Leitch in a statement. “We would be concerned that Sir Michael Wilshaw’s proposal to extend the National Curriculum down into early years risks damaging young children’s learning and development.” (end)
