It is not a requirement of the EYFS to do a report - but it is very good practice to summarise learning and development regularly so you can see how well the child is doing and note any problems quickly :D

Yes I personally do one after the first 5 weeks as I will have noticed lots of new things and then every 15 weeks. I do obs as well.

A colleague recently got outstanding in their inspection and does no written obs; she does 6-weekly summative assessments. So there is no one way of doing it. I personally do written obs and summative assessments, stuck in the LJ, with photos/artwork etc which parents love looking at. It also shows evidence of progression to Ofsted.

I have just done a 6 month report for a mindee. Its his first and the parents really liked it. It has 7 areas of learning and bullet points under each of what he is doing now. I then write a comment saying he has for-filled all expectations in the 16-26 months and is now falling into the 22-36 month age group. It is to show ofsted evidence of communication with the parents and their feedback.

I do one every 6 months a bit like a mini 2 year development that way when I do have to do the 2 year check it isn't so much work - in theory!
