Hi all,

Someone has mentioned that the have been told that an observation must cover all 3 prime areas in one ob. This isn't something that I do and doesn't seem right to me.

Thoughts please :)

One observation could cover all prime areas but not always. Definetly not must that's for sure.

No, not true.
There are no 'musts' with obs.
You do it the way that suits you.
There is no definition, no set way, no format to follow.

An obs may cover an area of learning, or 2 or 3 or all 7... or none as you can also observe interests which are no specific to any areas, or an obs may be something to do with you finding out about a child's Characteristics of Learning.

I think I know where that one has come from...

Observations for little people - normally under 3s - should focus on the prime areas of learning -

Communication & language

Physical

While the specific areas are important and must not be forgotten, in the early years the prime areas are considered vital until they are well established.

I think that's probably what it's about :D
